Shapiro: How can David Chang Fail?

Entrepreneur David S. Chang was elected Hawaii GOP chairman as some members debated whether U.S. Senate candidate Linda Lingle is a RINO -- Republican in Name Only. It's a corollary to the question of whether Hawaii Republicans are a political party in name only….

And a double quote of the week on APEC:

From House Republican Leader Gene Ward: "This is the Hawaii we want to be, the epicenter of technology and a place to do serious business. This is our entree to the future."

From Senate Republican Leader Sam Slom: "The occupation of Hawaii by the (APEC) summit and its 21 pampered leaders continues with more road closings, business disruption and political protests."

With such clear vision to work with, how can David Chang fail?

Kiaaina To Quit OHA For CD2 Race

Kiaaina said she submitted her resignation this week, but may stay in her post until the end of the year to give OHA time to find a replacement.

Kiaaina, a Democrat, has been OHA’s chief advocate since 2009. Previously she served as chief of staff to former Congressman Ed Case, who is running for U.S. Senate.

Honolulu Council Districts Finalized—Designed to Pit Pine against Berg

But objections linger that the Ewa community will be split in two and that the decision was purely political, designed to punish an outspoken Council member.

"So Ewa Beach is going to suffer, you're going to have communities that aren't whole, they aren't going to be represented equally, and it was all done for political purposes," Commissioner Tito Montes, who lives in Ewa, told Civil Beat after the meeting.

Without their names ever being mentioned, it was clear that a potential match-up between District 1 Council member Tom Berg and state Rep. Kymberly Pine was on the minds of commissioners. And the choice they made means that if Pine chooses to run for Council in 2012, she'll have to face Berg.

(If anybody is surprised by this, they haven’t been paying attention. This is a scheme to take out two GOPers in one election.)

Protesters to Greet Obama on Windward Shore

Windward Oahu residents are planning an Occupy Kualoa Regional Park event in Kaaawa this weekend.

Organizers say they want to spread a “keep the country country” message to first lady Michelle Obama and other APEC leaders who are scheduled to be in the area on Sunday.

WSJ: Inouye has Paterno-like Longevity

Until Wednesday, Joe Paterno had been Penn State's coach for 46 years—an almost unheard-of tenure. But outside of college football, there are folks who have hung around as long, or even longer.

Paterno—who was fired Wednesday amid a homosexual child sex-abuse scandal involving a homosexual former assistant—took over the Nittany Lions in 1966. But Sen. Daniel Inouye (D, Hawaii) first joined the Senate three years prior. Rep. John Dingell (D, Mich.) started serving in 1955. And Queen Elizabeth's reign began back in 1952.

Bankrupt hospitals to get cash from new lender

Prime Healthcare Services, a California firm that owns and operates 14 acute-care hospitals in Southern and Northern California, has agreed to provide funding for the hospitals as they seek out a buyer, according to two people familiar with the deal who asked not to be identified because the company hasn't released the information yet.

The new lender might be a potential purchaser, the sources said….

Patient escapes psychiatric hospital and remains at large despite search

A patient of the state psychiatric hospital in Kaneohe was still missing Friday after escaping from the facility Thursday, police said.

Robert Pacheco, 30, left the Hawaii State Hospital between 6:40 and 8:25 p.m. Thursday, police said. Officers searched the surrounding area but did not find him.

Pacheco was in a gym at the hospital before he got out, and the hospital reported an extra set of clothes might be missing, police said.

Treatment for drug convicts funded

Forty additional treatment slots will be available soon for nonviolent, mentally ill drug offenders in Hawaii due to a $200,000 federal grant being awarded to Oahu Circuit Court.

The treatment slots, which are typically state-funded, will be augmented by the federal grant for the next two years.

"It's really a great program, but it's limited in numbers because it is intensive and you see judges regularly," Circuit Judge Steven Alm said of the drug court program he runs on Oahu.

The court's Adult Drug Court program has 150 people enrolled, and the Hawaii First Judicial Circuit Mental Health Court has 32 participants. Thirty of the new slots will be awarded to the drug court, and 10 will go to the mental health court.

Alm said the additional treatment slots will be awarded to offenders who have "co-occurring" issues, meaning they have a combination of substance abuse problems and at least one mental illness.
