TGI: … If the multiple and persistent rumors are true, Representative Nakamura will soon have significant influence on how public policy is made and how the money is spent for the entire State of Hawaii…. Governor apologizes to former water commission deputy at Native Hawaiian Convention
HNN: … On the third and final day of the Native Hawaiian Convention, Gov. Josh Green apologized to Kaleo Manuel, the former deputy director of the state Commission on Water Resource Management.
Manuel resigned after being wrongly accused of (caught) withholding water needed to fight the Maui wildfires in August 2023.
“We hurt Kaleo deeply and I feel a great sadness that I was a part of that,” said Green. “He has bounced into a space that is more extraordinary, but I feel terrible and I humbly apologize for those moments.”
Attendees told Hawaii News Now now they were surprised by the apology and said it was a good thing. Others have called an open seat on the state commission an ‘abuse of power.’
Green says while he doesn’t have answers on sovereignty, everyone deserves to have a home.
“That worries me more than anything, so that will be a priority going forward, and I hope that you will see from me perhaps the most unlikely of allies that could have ever been imagined on issues like Hawaiian Home Lands,” Green said.
“We will always try to honor the voices of the Hawaiian people,” he promised.
The governor also spoke about his visit to Mauna Kea during the 2019 protest against the Thirty Meter Telescope, when he was lieutenant governor.
“That created a great rift between me and the governor at the time,” Green said. “In the perspective of a government official, they thought that was inappropriate.”

Neglect: “Only Waianae looks like Waianae”
CB: … Blangiardi said the city is making it a priority to crack down on short-term rentals owned by companies outside of Hawaii. The illegal rentals drive up rent prices and take homes off the market that could be long-term apartments for local families, he said.
For some Westside residents, though, the fact that the Silva Dome was allowed to remain standing is another example of the city neglecting their community.
“As far as the city saying, ‘We’re doing everything that we can,’ I find it very, very hard to believe,” said Samantha DeCorte, chair of the Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board. “Because if that were the case, then everybody else would be dealing with the same issues that Waianae is dealing with the lack of resources we need here.
“Only Waianae looks like Waianae,” she said. “You don’t go to Kailua and it looks like Waianae.”…

Man who killed Waianae Valley shooter describes moments leading to deadly rampage
HNN: … “We called the cops, and the cops said I can’t do nothing about it, because they can’t just go into somebody’s property because he had the gate. I felt kind of discouraged,” said Rishard Keamo-Carnate.
“We never owned guns. We didn’t like guns. We purchased it after we was threatened,” he added. “They just basically collected dust. We never know if we were going to use it.”
Then on Aug. 31, 2024, Rishard and Alison went to the Silvas to stop partygoers speeding on the narrow road they shared.

This Maui Board Was Created To Improve Transparency. Now It’s Accused Of Doing The Opposite
CB: … Councilwoman Keani Rawlins-Fernandez wants the public to be able to know who is applying for boards and commissions at the front end. Politics can get in the way of appointments, she said, “and for that reason, it’s in the public interest to ensure that transparency is provided to the public.”
So far, the County Council has only received four names among the 37 prospective new board members INB has sent to Mayor Richard Bissen for appointment. Some council members want those names disclosed publicly. They also want the minutes of INB meetings — board members have met several times since March — to be posted online in accordance with Hawaii’s Sunshine Law….
