SB: Judge erred allowing bail for child abuser
Giving credence to the wildest claim for Hawaiian separatism, a state judge has turned state law on its head by allowing a convicted child abuser to remain free on bail while awaiting an appellate court's ruling that she is not exempt from the law. Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall should be reprimanded for her outrageous misconduct in deciding that such an appeal has an ounce of legal merit, and her ruling should be quickly overturned.

Hawaii arrest warrants hit another backlog
As the state's economy slows down, the number of traffic-related bench warrants that get entered into state computers has also dropped off.
Judiciary spokeswoman Marsha Kitagawa said the latest arrest warrant backlog began building after the courts ran out of overtime money in August to pay clerks who entered warrant data into state computers.

Navy, environmentalists settle sonar suit
The Navy said Saturday the deal reached with the Natural Resources Defense Council and other groups requires it to continue to research how sonar affects whales and other marine mammals. It doesn't require sailors to adopt additional measures to protect the animals when they use sonar.
The agreement comes one month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Navy in another sonar lawsuit the NRDC filed.
