Kaleo Manuel to depart the Commission on Water Resource Management

MN: …On Tuesday, Water and Land Senate Committee Chair Lorraine R. Inouye (Senate District 1, Hilo, Paukaʻa, Papaikou, Pepeʻekeo) issued a statement regarding Manuel’s departure from the Commission on Water Resource Management, that she said takes effect Jan. 5, 2024.

‘Makes me angry’: Lahaina family marks bittersweet holiday as they prepare to leave Hawaii

HNN: … “This has been my home for a really long time, and I’ve never wanted to be anywhere else ... so being basically forced to leave because we can’t find any rentals that will take our family and dogs for under $10,000 and that in turn makes me very angry.”…

Right now, they are staying in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Napili for $7,000 a month….

She said they can’t afford to live on Maui anymore and she believes her family leaving is the beginning of a mass exodus coming….

HNN: … The 72-year-old writer stood in what would have been his kitchen to survey the ruins that remained. There are piles of household goods, but destroyed are his precious photographs and a book that he had written about about life on Maui in the 1970s that was ready to publish.

“What I lost there is irreplaceable. It’s like my life is gone,” Hill said….

Hill lived in Lahaina’s Hale Mahaolu Eono, a low-income senior housing complex where management says seven people died.

“It has to be shared. People died here. That’s Buddy’s house, that’s Angie’s house. She died there. Louise died there. Vergie died there,” Hill said, pointing to the burned homes around him. “I don’t know where the other four people died, but some were down there. This is like a cemetery.”…
