HPD: We don’t need more Police Ethics Training

HNN: … The Honolulu Police Department told commissioners this month that it has not added any additional ethics training despite the City Auditor’s recommendation. HPD said its existing ethics training includes four hours of training in the police academy and annual training for officers along with the City’s training every two years.

“It’s a component that we have that’s still sufficient. But, could we implement something outside of that? The answer is obviously yes, commissioner,” Honolulu Police Department said….

Meanwhile, annual police misconduct reports from each county are being released. The 2022 Hawaii County police misconduct report lists 23 violations involving officers cited for harassment, improper use of force, DUI and abuse of a household member….

“There are bills on it this year making sure that when an officer is engaged in some sort of misconduct or improper use of force that other officers there have a duty to intervene, and you don’t have situations like George Floyd,” said Sen. Chris Lee, (D) Kailua, Waimanalo, Hawaii Kai….

2nd Amendment advocates balk at Green proposal to create gun-free ‘sensitive places’

HNN: … Gov. Josh Green has unveiled a new statewide gun control plan that would designate specific firearm-free zones….

The measure would bans guns in “sensitive places,” including schools, government buildings, libraries, parks, eateries and bars with alcohol, and public transportation. It would also require mandatory insurance coverage and there are felony penalties.

Andrew Namiki Roberts, of Hawaii Firearms Coalition, called the bill “scary.”

“It would essentially eliminate the right to carry a firearm for self-defense for most people,” he said.

“Right now the capitol building is the only place where they have a ban on firearms. Everywhere else is open to the public. It’s just ludicrous that they want to disarm the public in such a vast area and it has no affect on crime,” he added….

Waiahole families facing huge rent hikes as farmers fight to keep local agriculture alive

HNN: … For almost 50 years, the Reppun family has been cultivating kalo and other crops in Waiahole Valley.

They still vividly remember the long fight to stop thousands of homes from being built there in the 1970s. That's when the state stepped in and bought the land to preserve local agriculture.

But now, a new battle is brewing. About 100 families were notified about a rent hike that would cripple the farming community….
