Hawaii Program Flies 600 Homeless People To The Mainland
CB: … The Institute for Human Services’ relocation program has served nearly 600 people experiencing homelessness on Oahu since 2015….
Jill Wright, director of philanthropy and community relations at the Institute for Human Services, said the program has reunited homeless people with families in Micronesia, American Samoa and Guam. It also sent people home to California, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and Montana….
Wright added that the shelter currently has 45 people from the mainland….

BWS chief blocks mayor’s landfill request over aquifer concerns
SA: … Honolulu Board of Water Supply Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau has rejected Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s request to locate the city’s next solid-waste landfill in an area where a chemical leak might foul the island’s water resources.
In a recent letter to the city, Lau said he was exercising his authority to deny the request because each of the city’s six proposed landfill sites is located over the island’s aquifer system….

Displaced Palolo Valley Residents Press City To Settle Over Damaged Homes

The residents evacuated the area one by one, between 2018 and 2020, afraid their houses may collapse or slide down a hill at any moment….
So far, the city and state have condemned and bought over 20 properties in the Waiomao area, but continue to deny that they are liable for the Kawahara’s house and the five others nearby, stating that any damages or losses sustained were caused by the residents’ own negligence….

‘Thermal Runaway’ -- Overheated Lithium Batteries Cause House Fire
SA: … A Honolulu Fire Department investigation has classified a fire that erupted Tuesday at a Kalihi residence as accidental, touched off by a “thermal runaway situation” that occurs when lithium ion batteries overheat while being charged.
No injuries were reported. The damage estimate to property and contents in the home in the 1600 block of Monte Street is $170,000, according to a news release issued Thursday by the department….
