Hawaii Congressional Delegation How They Voted May 7, 2022

Will Kahele Resign from Congress? -- He refuses to say

KHON: … As for the status of Kahele’s current district two congressional seat, KHON2 News reached out to the congressman’s office and campaign to find out if Kahele will remain in congress through the election or resign. Those questions remain unanswered by Kahele.

“He can try to hold on to it and run and then answer questions about that, Hart said. “Or he could resign, in which case Gov. Ige has the responsibility of appointing someone till the end of the term. So, C-D two has representation.” …

CB: Last month Civil Beat reported that Kahele had spent little time in Washington over the past six months and has been voting mostly by proxy. He also continued to fly for Hawaiian Airlines thanks to a special arrangement between him and the carrier.

SA: He did not take questions nor did he explain why he is not seeking a second term representing Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District

SA: But in a followup statement, Kahele touted he has been endorsed by the Ironworkers Local 625 and the Plasterers &Cement Masons, Local 630.

Watson: Kahele can Save Democrats from BJ Penn (no joke)

HNN: … said political insider Trisha Kehaulani Watson, (called as a witness for Katherine Kealoha) who worked on Kahele’s Congressional campaign:

“I think people should do their homework. But we also know it’s politics, right? This is gonna get gnarly,” she said. “The Democratic Party has a history of sort of beating each other up, bloody in primaries, and with a viable household name like BJ Penn on the Republican ticket. The Democrats really could be shooting themselves in the foot and paving the way for a Republican to come in. So it’s happened before. We’ve absolutely seen it.”

Watson said the race will come down to who shows up to vote, and which primary people are voting in. She believes Kahele appeals to local voters and the native Hawaiian community the way Penn does.

“There is a lot of crossover between his base and BJ’s base. So what will be interesting is whereas I think people may have crossed over to vote for Kai Kahele in the Democratic primary, who may not have necessarily been Republicans, I think we’re gonna see a large turnout in the Republican primary, which is not something that typically happens,” Watson said….

Kirk Caldwell is Jeremy Harris

Shapiro: … he was running under the cloud of a federal criminal investigation that has three of his former key appointees under indictment for a questionable $250,000 retirement payout to corrupt former Police Chief Louis Kealoha. The feds are still poking around, with further charges possible.

Former Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris found it similarly untenable and had to drop out when he tried to run for governor in 2002 with an unresolved campaign finance probe hanging over him….
