Of the nine Hawaii subcontractors for public outreach, only one has a website — Carlson Communications— and only three have listed phone numbers — AccuCopy, Carlson Communications and Gary K. Omori LLC.

While all nine are registered to do business with the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, most of the names seem to exist only in archived neighborhood board meeting minutes online where they are identified as representing the “Honolulu Rail Transit Public Involvement Team.”

Those who were tracked down, were reluctant to talk about their contracts or declined altogether. Doug Carlson of Carlson Communications and Pat Lee of Pat Lee & Associates declined to comment.

(Doug Carlson is the father of Honolulu Weekly publisher Ragnar Carlson. Of course Honolulu Weekly is in no way influenced by Mufi’s money. Really.)

Bloggers David Shapiro and Ian Lind have noted the religious fervor in Kaauwai’s message, but there is also a basic political strategy at work as well. Many Republicans believe the conservative Aiona has a better chance against former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, a liberal, because the political contrasts are starker than against Hannemann. (Abercrombie is also broke whereas Mufi has $2M in the bank. It is a truly glorious feeling to make the old boys burn $2M of their own dollars for absolutely nothing.)

'Yes We Care' fund to help families of Waipio Little League team

Starting Monday, August 30, First Hawaiian Bank will launch the "Yes We Care" fund to help parents with their finances, since many of them have been cheering for the team on the mainland since early August.

FHB will donate the first $5,000 to the fund.

If you want to make a monetary donation to the fund, make checks payable to "Waipio Little League Champions."

They'll be accepted at all FHB branches until Friday, September 17.

(Last Minute) Interest in service defines Caldwell

That's when Ann Kobayashi resigned her City Council seat to run for mayor.

"I thought: There's a perfect opportunity. I'll run for the Council, and I'll do it from that side," he says.

But Kobayashi resigned on the day of the candidate filing deadline for office.

"By the time I could confirm there was an opening, I had about four hours," Caldwell says.

Caldwell furiously tried to get the required 15 signatures for his filing papers, and he submitted his paperwork with one minute to spare before the 4:30 p.m. deadline. But in the last-minute scramble, his application came up one signature short, and Caldwell wound up getting the signature of a Manoa resident working in the City Clerk's office to get the required 15.

Questions were raised, and opponents threatened to contest his candidacy but Caldwell ultimately decided to settle the matter by filing his own challenge.

"Here I am, a trained lawyer, a professional lawyer practiced 30 years in litigation, yet I said I will bring this challenge and live with whatever the result is," Caldwell says. "I said I'm not going to play lawyer and appeal it. I'll accept it, respect it and move on. And that's what I did."

The challenge did not go in his favor, and Caldwell was disqualified from the race for failing to withdraw from his House race prior to filing for the Council vacancy.

(And so now he’s running for mayor.)

Note how the entire article is cast as Republicans backed into a corner, on the defense about to lose one of their only two Senate seats. This is the voice of the One Party System. Here are the two Republicans:

Enos, 53, co-founded the nation's first offshore aquaculture operation, working with state and federal regulators to create a framework for the new industry of ocean farming. She considers the economy the most pressing issue.

"I am 30-year resident of the state and have owned businesses, built a home, raised a family, worked within the community, all within the district," she said. "I believe that recovery will come with more taxpayers, not more taxes. Job creation must come from the private sector, attracting business investment to the state through tax incentives and small-business support."

Pandolfe, 46, who moved to Hawaii 10 years ago, said he got politically active when the economy went sour and the federal government began bailing out big companies. Last year he helped stage the first tea party event in Honolulu, and said he would work to lower taxes if elected.

"I don't want my daughter growing up in bondage to the government, with 70 percent of her paycheck taken away before she even gets it," said Pandolfe, president of Joe Builder Inc. "We need to keep the American dream alive."

Pandolfe has won the endorsement of Build-PAC Hawaii and Hawaii Right to Life.

The nonpartisan primary election hurdle

According to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, a nonpartisan candidate for House District 4 has complained to the Office of Elections about the primary election process and the burdens it places on nonpartisan candidates in order to advance to the general election. It’s an interesting story, especially this:

[In a letter to the Chief Elections Officer the candidate] says that no nonpartisan candidate in Hawaii’s history has ever advanced to public office in a partisan race.

"Of course, you darn well know they are just telling you what you want to hear," said (surrender monkey) Mele Stokesberry of Maui Peace Action. "They've got to defend their positions."

Stokesberry said she was concerned that the Navy is using depleted uranium in its weapons training but was told that only the Army uses the controversial metal for its projectiles.

Mahealani Oliver (whose home was raided by the FBI last year) said she came to find out firsthand where the Navy got the authority to conduct its operations in both the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. She also said she was concerned about its impact on the environment and aquatic life. "I just don't think it's a good place for training, you know?" Oliver said. (Maybe she could sell the Navy some title deeds, cheap.)

Obama benefits from Birtherism, hypes it

However, the birther contretemps suits Obama, because it allows the media to dismiss all of his critics by painting them with the Birther brush (which is why so many of us are frustrated and disgusted by the small coterie of people who continue to indulge it). Obama could put an end to it at any time by simply releasing his original birth certificate from Hawaii, which only he can authorize. Why doesn’t he do it? Because the Birther movement suits his purposes.

So when he made this complaint last night, it’s not just amateurish, it’s completely disingenuous:

“I can’t spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead,” quipped Obama, who took a deep breath to gather his thoughts when asked if the poll reflected his inability to communicate with voters.

State pushes to host future Obama library

(Hurry, 2012 is coming fast….) on Sunday a Hawaii delegation led by Reed Dasenbrock, UH vice chancellor for academic affairs, will fly to Washington, D.C., to meet with the head of the presidential library division of the National Archives and to Little Rock, Ark., to meet with the director of the Clinton Presidential Center and the Clinton Foundation. (There’s an idea. Get the Obama library by meeting his arch-enemies, the Clintons.)
