OHA Races: Alapa Unseats Longtime Incumbent Machado In Race For Molokai Seat

CB: … Keli’i Akina in a tight race to keep his at-large seat, and Keola Lindsey led the race for the Hawaii island seat….

Alapa had 34.2% of the vote compared with Machado’s 27.5%….

The results released Wednesday morning indicated incumbent Keli‘i Akina had the edge in his bid to keep his at-large seat. Akina had 34.2% of the vote compared with 33.5% held by his opponent, real estate agent Keoni Souza.

About 3,800 votes separated the two candidates in an election that showed voter turnout to be near 67%. As of Wednesday morning, the Hawaii Office of Elections reported that it still had about 12,000 ballots yet to process on Oahu.

Hawaii election rules state that automatic recounts occur if 100 or fewer votes separate candidates or 0.25% of the total votes cast, whichever is greater….

Keola Lindsey had 40.1% of the vote for the Hawaii island seat on OHA’s Board of Trustees. Lindsey far outstripped his opponent Lanakila Mangauil in the race for the board’s only open seat, with Mangauil claiming 25.6% of the vote in early returns.

Mangauil is a longtime activist best known for his opposition to the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope…

Voters Wait 5 or 6 Hours Because Oahu has only Two Voter Service Centers (Another Office of Elections screw-up)

HNN: … Nicholas Wang voted for the first time on Tuesday.

It took the 32-year-old six hours to make his way through the lines at Kapolei Hale and cast his ballot. And while he wasn’t a huge fan of the hot sun or the long wait, he doesn’t regret standing in line.

“I feel relieved. I finally got to vote,” he said. “If you don’t vote, you have not say.”

Going into Election Day, Hawaii saw a record number of votes cast, chiefly by mail.

But on Tuesday, the lines for in-person voting started early and never abated.

There were only two places on the island people could cast a ballot or register to vote: Honolulu Hale and Kapolei Hale. And lines snaked from both Voter Service Centers well into the night.

Jerry Domingo said he got in line at Kapolei Hale about 3:10 p.m.

He walked out, victorious, almost five hours later….

Post-Travel Screening Indicates Pre-Travel Testing Is Working

CB: … Fewer than 1 in 1,000 travelers infected with COVID-19 slipped through the cracks of Hawaii’s travel testing program, state officials said on Tuesday, announcing the results of a post-travel testing study created to supplement Hawaii’s Safe Travels program.

The testing, which was conducted Oct. 19 to Nov. 2, found 10 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 out of 11,027 tests conducted, for a rate of 0.091%, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said in a news release.

KITV: Less than 1% of those flying to Hawai'i have tested positive for COVID-19 in post-travel test

Prosecution of the U.S. Surgeon General is an expensive embarrassment

ILind: … I am so very embarrassed by the decision of the Honolulu prosecutors office to press ahead with criminal prosecution of U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams for violating Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s emergency orders. And I’m angry, as a citizen and taxpayer, that we’re wasting public funds and resources, and adding unnecessarily to the case load facing Hawaii’s already bogged down courts, to prosecute this public official who was, after all, here to assist the state in ramping up its Covid-19 testing.

I decided to check the court records on his case. Not only did prosecutors follow the original citation by filing a written criminal complaint against Adams, the case has now been assigned to attorneys normally handle felony cases, you know, serious crime.

Here’s an excerpt from the court docket….

Motive for shot fired at Miske’s brother in 2013 remains unknown

ILind: … According to the Star-Advertiser account, the shooting happened just after 4:30 a.m. as Stancil was standing next to his truck on the side of Iana Street in Kailua talking to Sonny Kaloi. Rapozo pulled up in a stolen truck, and Stancil asked “if he could have a private conversation with Kaloi.” ….

Court records show Rapozo and Kaloi had been charged together in November 2011 with terroristic threatening, a Class C felony. Rapozo’s bail in that case was set at $100,000, while Kaloi’s was $40,000….

There were repeated delays granted in the terroristic threatening case, most requested by defense attorneys.

In a court hearing held on April 30, 2012, prosecutors told Judge Edward Kubo they were not ready to proceed, and asked for another continuance. The request was opposed by Kaloi’s attorney. Judge Kubo overruled the objections and granted prosecutors a final 1-month continuance to May 25, court minutes show. But when May 25 rolled around, prosecutors were still unprepared and sought yet another continuance. Attorneys for both defendants objected. Judge Edward Kubo sided with them and ordered the charges dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning that they could not be refiled later….

(As usual the serious criminals walk free again and again.)

Local Telecom Company Emerging As Potential Successor To Sandwich Isles

HPR: … Pacific Network Holdings President and CEO Bob Maloney has been in the telecom business for more than 40 years. He watched Sandwich Isles Communications founder Al Hee do what he says few in the telecommunications business were willing to do at the time.

“In spite of everything else heʻs done that people take a dim view of, what he’s left behind is a collection of telecom infrastructure assets that really are first quality,” said Maloney.

Sandwich Isles built an undersea fiber optic cable network and installed nearly 200 miles of underground infrastructrure needed to connect the entire state of Hawaiʻi. But legal and financial trouble may soon force a sale of these assets. Maloney says his company is ready to bid on it.

“First of all, we believe the best case for Hawaiʻi is that ownership and control of these rather unique assets remain in local hands, number one,” says Maloney, “And number two, that the assets be open to benefit the rest of the state as well.”    …

“We don’t know yet when exactly the Department of Justice is going to actually foreclose on those assets,” said Maloney. “Obviously when they do, that’ll be like the last nail in Sandwich Isles’ coffin.”

A spokesperson for the Federal Communications Commission says Hawaiian homestead customers should not expect any service interruptions. Regardless of what happens, FCC would not allow an end to Sandwich Isles services unless another company was ready to take over.
