Crime Wave Shows Need for More Prison Space
Cataluna:. …One week ago, on a Friday afternoon, a grandmother in her 60s was watching her 2-year-old grandchild at home in Palolo. The worst thing that should happen in a situation like that is that the neighbor’s unruly dogs bark too much and interrupt the toddler’s nap or grandma runs out of the baby’s favorite snack.
What happened that day was unimaginable in most people’s vision of Hawaii: Two strangers forced their way into the house, pointed a handgun, tied up grandma and ransacked the house.
Monday night, a woman in her 60s, visiting from Japan, was walking back to her Waikiki hotel room with her son when she was robbed and her son beaten by thieves working as part of a gang of criminals roaming the streets, targeting unsuspecting victims and driving off into the night.
In the past several weeks, there have been broad- daylight carjackings and broad-daylight burglaries and gun violence in neighborhoods.
… As with so many things on Oahu, the solution comes down to political will and political power. We need a fully staffed police department, a scandal-free prosecutor’s office and prison facilities where there’s room for more because clearly, there are people out here who should be in there. All that needs to happen immediately….

New Hilo Jail Designed to Make Stay More Pleasant for Child Molesters, Pimps, Rapists and Drug Dealers
HTH: … Designed to hold 226 inmates, the Big Island’s only jail, which has two campuses in Hilo, had an Oct. 22 population of 420. It’s the most crowded correctional center in the state, but relief is expected to come soon with the construction of a new medium-security building at the corner of Wainuenue Avenue and Komohana Street….
The Legislature appropriated $12.8 million for the new facility. It features an innovative design, more like a college dorm than the prisons of “Cool Hand Luke” fame. There’s a big lounge area and a little garden and outdoor recreation areas, Cabreros said.
“Trying to design facilities that don’t look like jails,” he said. “It’s a new concept.”…

Assault at UH game alleged by Star-Advertiser photographer
SA: … A Honolulu Star-Advertiser photographer said he was assaulted at last week’s University of Hawaii football game and suffered injuries after being shoved by the head coach and then knocked to the ground by a UH employee.
The attacks were confirmed by others, who spoke off the record.
The assault took place toward the end of last Saturday’s game against San Diego State, according to the photographer, Jamm Aquino. Coach Nick Rolovich charged Aquino, swearing at him, and made contact. The UH employee then shoved Aquino to the ground, he said, leaving him with a concussion, a bloody nose and split lower lip as he fell on his camera, and a sore shoulder. A camera lens also was damaged….
The university issued a statement Thursday night regarding Saturday’s incident:
“We are disappointed that a Star-Advertiser photographer violated sideline protocol by entering the field of play Saturday night.
“Coach Rolovich acknowledges that he came into physical contact with the photographer as he was attempting to clear the field to avoid being penalized because, with two seconds left on the clock, the game was not over.
“Coach Rolovich regrets the situation occurred. He contacted the photographer late Saturday night and apologized.
“The university is addressing the situation with Coach Rolovich regarding the matter and will have no further comment.”

Protesters Next Target Missile Defense System?
SA: … But one of Soquena’s biggest worries isn’t lower-paid non-union labor; it’s the protests on Mauna Kea. He fears the blockade against the Thirty Meter Telescope could spark similar opposition to current projects — a park at Sherwood Forest in Waimanalo and wind turbines in Kahuku come to mind — as well as future ones, including a planned missile defense system to be sited either in Kahuku or at Kaena Point….
