Kealoha Hires Former Meth Dealer to Represent Him in Court

KHON: …According to court documents, Louis Kealoha has hired attorney Gary Modafferi, a former Honolulu deputy prosecuting attorney who was arrested and charged with distributing crystal methamphetamine to a government informant in 1997.  (Birds of a feather.)

Green, who represented Modafferi in that case, says Modaferri has moved on from that mistake.

As for why the former police chief hired Modafferi, Green believes there is too much conflict of interest for one lawyer to represent the Kealohas due to the multiple, and separate, criminal charges.

“There are counts Kathy was indicted on the chief wasn’t. The lawyer would have to cross-examine, theoretically, the client. There’s not a chance in the world the lawyer could do both,” Green said….

Meanwhile, criminal defense attorney Michael Green has been hired to represent two people who were children when Katherine Kealoha was guardian for their trust accounts.

In 2004, Katherine Kealoha, as a private attorney, set up separate trust fund accounts for a brother and sister, ages 10 and 12 at the time….

Former cop with ties to Kealoha investigation charged in DUI case

HNN: …The Honolulu prosecutor's office said Friday afternoon that the charges against former HPD Sgt. Albert Lee stem from an incident that occurred in November 2016 along Lunalilo Home Road in Hawaii Kai.

Early that morning, Lee was discovered in the passenger seat of his vehicle after it had crashed into a structure along the road. Responding police officers reported that he appeared to be intoxicated, though Lee claimed he had not been driving the vehicle.

No one else was found at the scene of the accident.

Lee had been scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury against the Kealohas later that same morning. (The DUI would serve to discredit Lee’s testimony while he fulfills his obligation to testify.)

Last December, Lee told Hawaii News Now he was targeted by Katherine Kealoha for pulling over a friend of her's along Queen Street for using a cell phone while driving.

The driver took off during the traffic stop, and Lee says it took less than 24 hours for him to receive a call from Katherine Kealoha instructing him to back off. ….

Ige taps Kim to lead working group on Mauna Kea peace monument

HTH: Gov. David Ige has tapped Mayor Harry Kim to lead a working group to create a “living monument for world peace” on Mauna Kea.

In an Oct. 14 letter to the mayor, Ige pledged to “make myself, my staff and my resources” available to achieve this goal.

“I could think of no better person than you to lead and organize a working group of like-minded individuals to create a Living Monument for World Peace on Mauna Kea,” Ige said in the letter to Kim.

“This journey will test all of us and will go beyond the merging of culture, science, education, economics and the environment,” Ige said. “On this journey, we must be mindful that we are able to call Hawaii our home today because of the grace, mutual respect and aloha that were given to us as a gift by the People of Hawaii’s First Nation.” ….

Kim said Friday he will take two or three weeks to choose about eight people to be on the working group. The final shape of the project and timeline will depend on the group, he said…..

Anti-Telescope Protesters Arrested at BLNR Meeting

KHON: …The state says the meeting was about to begin when the trio started protesting, calling for the resignation of one of the board members.

Samuel M. Gon III is the board member representing Oahu and fulfills the requirement that one member of the board has “expertise in native Hawaiian traditional and customary practices.” ….

Protesters said they were upset that the board authorized the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Mauna Kea, and wanted the board’s “cultural adviser” to step down.

Officials say they refused to quiet down or leave the room.

Officers with the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement carried them out of the building.

Honolulu police arrested them for disorderly conduct…..

News Release from BLNR October 28, 2017

BLNR Chair Suzanne Case issued the following statement today about protesters at Friday’s Land Board meeting calling for Board Member Sam Gon’s resignation:

“Sam ‘Ohu Gon is held in the highest respect by innumerable people.  As a scientist and as a recognized expert in native Hawaiian traditional and customary practices, Sam brings tremendously valuable perspective and integrity to the Land Board decisions.  No Land Board member is appointed as a representative of or advocate for any particular group.

“It is disappointing and frankly offensive that some who disagree with the Land Board’s recent decision on the TMT telescope choose to aim personally at ‘Ohu or any board member.  This is not peaceful protest.  We must simply reject this kind of divisiveness in Hawaiʻi as well as nationally and globally, and practice respect in our public discourse no matter our views.”

Out of respect for the contested case process, the Land Board members have agreed not to discuss the TMT decision until the appeal period has run next month.
