Report: Island With Highest Prices Has Smallest Proportion of Mainland Buyers
HNN: …There were some 2,576 home buyers on Maui last year. Of those 1,077 were from the mainland and 71 were from foreign countries.
On Oahu, 19 percent of buyers were from the mainland and 4 percent were from overseas, according to the state's 2016 Data Book.
(So the most expensive island has the smallest proportion of out-of-state buyers.)
On both the Kauai and the Big Island, about 37 percent of buyers were from the mainland…..
In 2015, a state report concluded that since 2008, 47 percent of homes on the Neighbor Island homes had been sold to out-of-state residents…..

Oral Arguments set for Morita vs Gorak

Woman who waited 4 hours for rescue from condo fire dies
SA: An 81-year-old retired librarian, who had been trapped in her Marco Polo condo on the 32nd floor during the July 14 inferno, died 20 days later.
Marilyn Van Gieson, who lived in Unit 3216, six floors above the ignition point, waited four hours in her apartment for firefighters to carry her down, said her son, Michael.
Van Gieson was immediately taken to Straub Medical Center, where she remained until her death Aug. 3, her neighbor Ann Wright said….

At first I thought it was my imagination, but this summer there was no denying it: I felt, abruptly, like I was snorkeling through an underwater desert. Most of the coral had turned white, a sign that it was in danger of dying. Entire species of fish had vanished, and those that remained — like Hawaii’s tongue-twisting state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a — were sparse….
According to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, the fish population of what I have come to consider my reef had, depending on the areas surveyed, declined between 43 and 69 percent between the late 1970s and 2008. The state created a long-term “coral bleaching recovery plan” to prevent further damage and promote regrowth after specific events, like the spreading mass of warm water in the Pacific Ocean in 2014 that came to be known as “the Blob,” or the high ocean temperatures that killed 50 percent of coral on some reefs off Big Island in 2015. But there is something in addition to climate change that may be damaging reefs, something more immediately and individually controllable: sunscreen…..
