Mainland Homosexual Threatens to Assault Bishop Silva
CB: The one and only Dan Savage told me this week that the Catholic church should “get out of the homophobia business” if its leaders like Honolulu Bishop Larry Silva really care about the well-being of Hawaii’s keiki.
The influential sex columnist didn’t stop there. I just couldn’t print everything in the initial piece for the sake of brevity and, well, his fondness for using colorful language to express distaste and disdain for someone, like when he referred to the bishop by a compound term that starts with “mother.”...
Savage’s first reaction was to say Silva had a lot of gall, and that “If I could get within arm’s length of him I’d slap him.”

Bishop Silva Letter: Civil Beat Caught in Another 'Fact Check' Lie (Star-Adv joins in)
Civil Beat: “Children will be the greatest casualties, in that they will be deprived of being raised in a loving home by a mother and a father who loves them and whose love cooperated with God’s plan in creating them,” Silva says in the letter. “When children are deprived of such a home, there will be more poverty, more social ills, more juvenile suicides, and more problems than we can imagine.”
Is there any scientific evidence to back the bishop's claim? We couldn't find any generally accepted studies to support the assertion.
'No Serious Study"? Star-Advertiser Repeats the Same Lie
Reality: It took Hawai'i Free Press about 30 seconds to find the link to just such a study >>> LINK
And here is the writeup on the study: New Research on Children of Same-Sex Parents Suggests Differences Matter
And here are the key paras from the writeup--which you can see line up almost word-for-word with Bishop Silva's letter:
Compared to young adults in traditional, intact families, young adults whose mothers had a same-sex relationship tended to fare worse than their peers in intact biological families on 24 of the 40 outcomes examined. For example, they were far more likely to report being sexually victimized, to be on welfare, or to be currently unemployed.
Young adults whose fathers had a same-sex relationship showed significant differences from their peers in intact families on 19 of the outcomes. For example, they were significantly more likely to have contemplated suicide, to have a sexually transmitted infection, or to have been forced to have sex against their will.
BOTTOM LINE: Once again--as so often before--Civil Beat "Fact Check" has been dismissed. Civil Beat really should get out of the 'Fact Check' business.

GOP Primed to make Issue of Gay Marriage in 2014 Election
SA: The legislators do not have the needed super-majority to call themselves back into session to amend state law and Abercrombie is framing the issue in terms of "if and when I call a special session."
The state GOP has been primed to make an issue of the bill,..."Forcing this heated issue through an abbreviated session will only stifle public input, which should be the most important part of the legislative process. Gov. Abercrombie should be welcoming, not suppressing, the voice of the public on this issue," the Hawaii GOP said in a statement....
Holding the session now allows a decision before any large opposition can be mounted. So far, a coalition of 100 Christian ministers has voiced the loudest protest, but if the fight is delayed until January, opponents will have the time to create a louder voice....
Estimates for the votes in the 51-member House range from 26 to 30, with some refusing to commit.

Interior official to speak at Hawaiian meeting
SA: One of the largest gatherings to focus on Native Hawaiian issues takes place next week, and establishing a more direct relationship with the federal government is expected to be one of the key topics of discussion.
U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, who could play a critical role at the federal level in helping guide the process, is scheduled to attend the conference Wednesday and give a keynote address, a conference planner said Thursday.
The 12th annual Native Hawaiian Convention opens Tuesday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. More than 500 people had signed up to attend as of this week.
Forging a greater relationship with the federal government, including discussions on pursuing formal recognition of Hawaiians administratively rather than legislatively, is among the topics to be addressed, according to convention planners.
"We have to continue to make sure we solidify our trust relationship with the federal government," said Michelle Kauhane, president and chief executive of the nonprofit Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, which organized the convention with the help of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission.
Kauhane said she received word Thursday from Interior officials that Jewell will be at the convention Wednesday. Her keynote address will be about 12:30, right before the day's luncheon, according to Kauhane.

Randall Roth: Rail is the New Broken Trust
SA: Randall Roth has been a "name in the news" in Hawaii for a long time, most recently as a co-plaintiff in a lawsuit against the city's $5.2 billion rail transit system, currently before the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. A decision is expected any day now, including on whether it is even within that court's jurisdiction to decide on it just yet.
Roth contends that the city's proposed elevated heavy rail was sold to the public as a traffic-reduction solution, but actually is about "transit-oriented development and fundraising."
A University of Hawaii law professor since 1982, specializing in trusts, estates, federal taxation and professional responsibility, Roth says the rail project is a "broken trust." That's also the title of an expose he co-wrote in the late 1990s about shenanigans at Bishop Estate

Ex-administrator remains on payroll in preservation division
SA: Pua Aiu resigned July 2 as the division administrator days after National Park Service officials reported that "serious problems" remain at the division. As a "high risk grantee," the division could lose its federal funding if those problems aren't fixed within a year.
The division has had the high-risk designation since 2010. Aiu led the division — part of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources — for five years.
Ever since her resignation, Aiu has continued to work at DLNR as a special assistant to Land Board Chairman William Aila, state officials now say. She remains involved in the review of the Honolulu rail transit project's archaeological inventory survey, a process the state expects to wrap up soon, among other tasks....

Big Island hunters oppose continued helicopter hunts
BIVN: A protest was held outside the DLNR building on Kilauea and Kawili in Hilo on Wednesday. About 20 to 30 hunters and other recreation users of Mauna Kea demonstrated against the state’s policy of eradicating sheep on the mountain. Philip Heileson, who maintains the website MaunaKeaMassacre.com, says the DLNR’s helicopter hunts are inhumane.

Crews remove 2 tons of sidewalk 'nuisances'
SA: City maintenance crews continued to clear Honolulu sidewalks this week, removing 28 shopping carts and hauling away 2.14 tons of waste from Chinatown, Aala Park, Waikiki and Thomas Square.
Authorities said locations selected for enforcement of sidewalk-related ordinances are those where the city has received complaints.
Wednesday's efforts included Thomas Square, Aala Park, Kamamalu Park, Smith Street, Kukui Gardens, Old College Walk and the Ala Wai Promenade across from the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
