Veto Overrides “increase tax burden, discourage job creation, impede recovery”
By News Release @ 8:35 PM :: 6454 Views :: Energy, Environment

STATEMENT ON VETO OVERRIDES

The following statement was issued by Barry Fukunaga, chief of staff.

“It is unfortunate that the Legislature has chosen to ignore the valid reasons and legitimate concerns Governor Lingle identified in her veto of bills that will have negative and long-term impact on the cost of living and doing business in Hawai‘i.

“By overriding the Governor’s vetoes, the Legislature has chosen to increase the tax burden on our residents and businesses at a time when they can least afford to pay more of their hard-earned money to support a government that is no longer responsive to the needs of the citizens of our state.

“The Legislature's overrides have imposed laws that will also discourage job creation and hinder the state’s ability to streamline and improve government services that would be more beneficial to our neediest residents.

“By bowing to special interests, rather than what is in the best interest of all the people of Hawai‘i, the Legislature’s actions will only impede the economic recovery of our state.”

DEMOCRATS MAKE A DELIBERATE CHOICE TO INCREASE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN ON HAWAII’S FAMILIES

HONOLULU-- Hawai'i Republican Party Chairman Jonah Ka'auwai issued the following statement after the Hawaii State Legislature overrode Governor Lingle's veto of a 2000% increase on the state barrel tax:

“This is a perfect example of Democrat legislators talking out of both sides of their mouths.  On one hand they are advocating for Hawai’i’s low income families and criticizing proposed cuts to state programs and departments.  On the other they are forcefully imposing a 2000% percent increase in taxes on a fundamental necessity to those same families.  Hawai'i already has the nation’s highest energy costs.  The decision to override this veto is a conscious and deliberate choice by Democrats in the legislature to increase the financial burden on Hawai’i’s families.

“As Republicans we believe in fiscal accountability and that government has enough of the people’s hard-earned money.  Democrats have proved that they cannot be trusted by the people of Hawai’i to make the right decisions.  Hawai’i needs principled leadership that will do what is right rather than do what is easy.”
