Fingers point at Self-styled “King of Hawaii” in Tucson shootings

The six people killed Saturday outside a Tucson supermarket include Federal Judge John Roll, 9 year old Christina-Taylor Green, and four others.  Fourteen more were wounded, among them US Rep Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who remains in critical condition after being shot in the head.  But in spite of—or perhaps because of--these deaths and injuries, finger pointing by those seeking to assign blame has reached a fever pitch.  In articles today, Slate magazine, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Ben Smith of Politico attempt to tie alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner to a strange website promoting a self-styled “King of Hawaii.”

The “reasoning” applied by David Weigel of Slate goes like this:

Yesterday, musician Caitie Parker, a former classmate of alleged Tucson shooter Jared Loughner, tweeted that "as I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy." Later in the day, on MSNBC's Countdown, the Southern Poverty Law Center's Mark Potok commented that Loughner's confusing YouTube videos about constitutionality, government brainwashing and syntax resembled the work of David Wynn Miller, the self-identified "king of Hawaii" who writes books and offers seminars about complicated and incoherent theories, mostly about language, and how rectifying language can protect people from the government.

Jared Lee Loughner’s Youtube site and comments by his acquaintances portray him as a flag burner, atheist, leftist, and pot head.  But a memo leaked this morning from the Homeland Security department suggested Loughner could be tied to the eugenics-oriented group “American Renaissance” – quickly bringing a sharp denial from its leaders.  But perhaps in the erstwhile King Miller, the desperate liberals of Slate, Politico, and SPLC have found a patsy.  In contrast to the denials from American Renaissance, Miller is willing to at least partly go along. Slate reports:

“Carrie Budoff Brown talked to Miller, who said he never met Loughner but agreed with his statements on YouTube.”

Nut A sounds a little like Nut B, so they must be somehow connected--and Nut B is nutty enough to say he agrees with Nut A, therefore Loughner is a conservative. It is simple logic.

Miller’s bizarre website includes pages titled “Hawaii 23 Mar 09”, “Hawaii 27 Feb 09”, “Hawaii DVD 2009”, “Hawaii Constitution”, and “Mauri Constitution.”

Miller’s “Hawaii Constitution” is a typical example of his writing.  It starts out:

FOR THIS HAWAI’I-TERRITORY-CONSTITUTION OF THE HAWAIIAN-KANAKA-MAULI-SOVEREIGNTY ARE WITH THE NATIONAL-LODIAL-LAND-CLAIMS.

For these CLAIMS: :VERB-SYNTAX-(THINKING): IS = SINGULAR, ARE = PLURAL. (C.-S.-S.-C.-S.-L.)= :CORRECT-SENTENCE-STRUCTURE-COMMUNICATION-SYNTAX-LANGUAGE. (H.-L.-L.-T.-C.)= :HAWAI’I-LODIAL-LANDS-TRUSTEE-COUNCIL. (LODIAL-LAND)= :ORIGINAL-HAWAII-DNA-BLOOD-OWNERSHIP-JURISDICTION. :TRANSITIONAL = FROM THE YEAR-~800-A.D. WITH THE NOW-TIME-MODERN-TECHNOLOGY-CHANGES OF THESE HAWAII-TERRITORIAL-ETHNIC-KANAKA-MAULI.

So obviously Miller is a conservative because the letter "C" appears repeatedly in his writings.

According to a rambling statement on his website, Miller lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   But readers are invited to mail a postal money order to an address which corresponds to a self-storage unit in the industrial Kalihi area of Honolulu.  In exchange they will receive the following (spelling errors in the original):

A call to the area code 808 cell phone number listed on the site reveals a message: “At the subscriber’s request, this phone does not accept incoming calls.”

According to his site, Miller will be hosting an eight-hour seminar on “FORECLOSURERS” January 29, 2011 at a Hampton Inn in South San Francisco.

Miller has no apparent ties to any known Hawaii Sovereignty group.

CORRECTION Jan 10, 2011 9:50AM: The Honolulu Advertiser, January 22, 2009 describes Miller as the spokesman for the Hawaiian Kingdom Government.  Miller's name shows up in the last line of the article: “The courts have no jurisdiction over Makekau, said the sovereignty group's spokesman, David-Wynn Miller. Miller said he is a ‘plenipotentiary judge, ambassador and postmaster’ based in Milwaukee.”

In 2009,  "Her Highness Rita Kulamika Makekau, Royal Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Hawaiian Kingdom Government" was sentenced to jail for abusing five foster children by chipping their teeth with a claw hammer in what prosecutors described as "a house of torture."
