Duke and Lynn Launch Web Series Video on Education

From www.AionaFinnegan.com

HONOLULU - Duke Aiona and Lynn Finnegan today launched the fourth in a series of online videos to discuss issues that are important to Hawai‘i's working families and small businesses.

The fourth spot, "Do it Right," focuses on conducting a comprehensive, independent audit of the State Department of Education, which hasn't been conducted in nearly 40 years - since 1973.

The release of the web series video comes on the heels of an admission by our opponent that he will stand in line with the leadership of the Hawai‘i State Teachers Association (HSTA) by opposing a ballot proposition on whether Hawai‘i's next Governor should be allowed to appoint the Board of Education (BOE).

"Now, more than ever, our citizens want a Governor who will stand up for education reform, and our opponent has not demonstrated that he is willing or able to do so," said Lynn Finnegan. "The ballot proposition for an appointed school board has bipartisan support from four of Hawai‘i's Governors and other education officials, yet the support our opponent has received from union leaders who are funding his campaign will make it difficult for him to challenge the unions in order to achieve comprehensive education reform. Education reform is a major undertaking, but working with a fully engaged and involved public, Duke and I are ready to get the job done now."

Our opponent also opposes a comprehensive, independent audit of the DOE, which consumes approximately 41 percent of the state general fund budget.

"Not enough money is going into the classroom, where our teachers lack the resources to prepare our young people for a global economy based on knowledge and innovation," said Duke Aiona. "Teachers should not have to spend their own money to pay for supplies and materials, and students should not have to learn with out-of-date textbooks or without access to computers and technology. With the results of the public vote, and a comprehensive, independent audit of the DOE, an Aiona-Finnegan Administration will have the information necessary to direct the most effective restructuring of our public education system in a generation."

An Aiona-Finnegan Administration will ensure more money is spent in the classroom by proposing legislation to require 90 cents of every education dollar to be spent at the school level.

The 30-second web video, "Do it Right," consists of time-lapse driving sequences, seeing the islands through Duke Aiona's perspective as we hear his thoughts.

The web video can be viewed online at www.AionaFinnegan.com or Duke and Lynn's YouTube channel on www.YouTube.com/user/DukeAiona.

The following is a transcript of Duke Aiona and Lynn Finnegan's fourth web video, "Do it Right."

Duke Aiona (as voice over): Our economy, our communities, our future… they’re only as good as the education we give to our keiki.

Improving our schools isn’t just about spending more money.

It’s about making sure that we’re getting the most out of every dollar that we invest - knowing what’s working, and what isn’t.

We only get one shot at the future.

Let’s do it right.

It’s my responsibility as a parent; it’ll be my priority as Governor.
