DJOU DISCUSSES SPENDING PROPOSALS, JOB FAIR ON HAWAII NEWS NOW

Honolulu, HI — Congressman Charles K. Djou (HI-01) appeared on Hawaii News Now “Sunrise” this morning to discuss returning to Washington, the President’s latest economic proposals and the First Congressional District Job Fair this week:

Video is available HERE.

Excerpts:

On the President’s proposed spending package of $50 billion

“Unfortunately the mentality of the majority in Congress right now is ‘spend, spend, and—if that doesn’t work—spend some more.’ And [the President’s proposal] seems to be further in line with the mentality in Congress, which is unfortunate because we have spent so much money. Even worse than that, we’ve spent all this money, and it hasn’t worked—unemployment has actually gone up since we passed the stimulus package. And the worst part about it all is that we have no plan to pay any of this money back, other than to hand the bill off to our nation’s children.

“So this $50 billion stimulus package—mini-stimulus package two, so to speak—I think, unfortunately is not going to work. We need to look at other priorities and look at ways of creating jobs, not just spending more of the people’s money.”

On the President’s proposed tax breaks for businesses

“Well, preliminarily these sound good, especially giving a business write off for capital improvements and purchasing new equipment. These, I think, are good ideas, but I will wait to see—the devil’s always in the details—exactly what the President is going to propose. But initially, these proposals sound good. They’re certainly a lot better than the ‘spend more money’ proposal that he put out yesterday.”

On the First Congressional District Job Fair on Thursday

“Yes, this coming Thursday, we’re going to have a job fair over at Dole Cannery. It’s free. Parking is also free for the first 200 to join us.

“I will say the single best remedy to unemployment and the single best social service program ever created is a job. And we certainly know we need a lot more of those around.

“This is open to anybody and everybody, my office is just putting it on. I welcome anybody to come. If you need a job, or if you’re underemployed or if you know somebody who does need a job, I would certainly welcome you to this job fair over at Dole Cannery this coming Thursday.”
