CHRISTOPHER J. WONG ANNOUNCES BID FOR HONOLULU CITY COUNCIL, DISTRICT 6

Non-Profit Advocate & State Commissioner Announces Candidacy for Council Seat

HONOLULU, May 18, 2010 – Christopher J. Wong, small business owner and non-profit advocate announced his candidacy for the City Council tonight at the Mandalay Restaurant in downtown Honolulu. In attendance to this intimate event were Chris Wong Campaign Committee Honorary Chair, Oswald K. Stender; publisher of Hawai‘i’s Most Wanted magazine and Committee Chair Mary Jean Castillo-Barkley; business leaders and elected officials in support of his candidacy.

“For Chris, it is not just about the generations to come but rather about binding together—in unity and solidarity—to bring about a higher quality of life for all of us now,” states Stender, who is referred to affectionately as ‘Uncle Oz’ by staff and volunteers.

Supporters believe that Wong, who was born, educated and raised in the district with an extensive background serving in leadership positions in the non-profit industry, will bring new perspective and new energy to the city council.

“Chris has been deeply involved in the community on a grassroots level, isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to create solutions and most importantly, comes with no-strings attached,” says Castillo-Barkley, “it is time for the next generation of leadership for this generation of problems.”

A seat currently held by term-limited Councilman Rodney Tam, the sixth district comprises of Kalihi, Kalihi Valley, ‘Alewa Heights, Liliha, Nu‘uanu, Pacific Heights, Pauoa, Punchbowl, Papakolea, Chinatown, Downtown and Makiki.

“Chris has been on the ground and has been touching the hearts of people through his work,” says Reverend Daniel de Gracia II, “a lot of us have been waiting for this announcement for years.”

“Today, we face some of the toughest challenges in recent memory,” says Wong, “our city council needs members who are thoughtful yet decisive, who understand our needs and are willing to work hard to overcome obstacles to make our community a better place for all of us.

It is time for an energetic fresh approach.”
