News Release from Hawaii GOP>>>www.factcheckhi01.com

MYTH: Ed Case said tonight he 'understood' DC and talked about his 'experience' representing Hawaii's other district. Case also attempted to defend his 148 missed votes, stating 148 was not that much.

FACT: Ed Case was rated one of the least effective members of Congress and missed numerous important votes:

“Two members of Congress ranked as some of the least effective – Rep. Ed Case [D-Hawaii] and Sen. Dan Akaka [D-Hawaii] – are battling over who has the worse rating on a national political Web site.” (Richard Borreca, “Case to Akaka, Akaka to Case: You’re ineffective,” Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 08/29/06)

Power and ability to be effective in Washington: “The Web service also rates the 435 members of the House and 100 senators on a scale for their power and influence in Washington… Case is ranked 410 out of 435, according to Congress.org. The Web site says each member of Congress is rated on 15 criteria that ‘demonstrated power and the ability to be effective in Congress in 2005. This resulted in a power score that ranked members for overall power in each chamber of Congress… Case ‘earns a power score of 5.02, in the bottom 10 percent of the House.” (Richard Borreca, “Case to Akaka, Akaka to Case: You’re ineffective,” Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 08/29/06)

Influence rating: “Influence votes through media, caucuses or giving money to other members: Case: -2 (426 out of 435)” (Richard Borreca, “Case to Akaka, Akaka to Case: You’re ineffective,” Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 08/29/06)

Legislative Activity Rating: “Power of legislator in being able to amend legislation, excluding ceremonial or technical amendments or nonbinding resolutions. Case: 0 (418 out of 435)” (Richard Borreca, “Case to Akaka, Akaka to Case: You’re ineffective,” Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 08/29/06)

While in Congress, Ed Case missed 148 votes, including a vote to honor and recognize Filipino World War II veterans: During the 108th Congress, Case missed 61 votes. During the 109th Congress, Case missed 87 votes. (House Roll Call 452, 09/19/06) and (Washington Post U.S. Congress Vote Database)

MYTH: Ed Case says his most crowning achievement as Hawaii Congressman for CD-2 was the designation of Papahanaumokuakea (Northwest Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument) as a national monument.

FACT: From State Senator Fred Hemmings "Ed Case did introduce legislation to protect Hawaii's northwest archipelago but as with most of his efforts, nothing happened in Congress. The truth is that the PEW Foundation's Environmental Division headed by Joshua Reichert and one its representatives Jay Nelson, were instrumental in Hawaii in promoting sanctuary status for the northwest archipelago which is part of my 25th State Senatorial District. I urged Governor Lingle to work with the federal government in creating the world's largest marine sanctuary."  Read the whole story at: www.factcheckhi01.com
