Tsutsui’s Priorities Outlined for LG Conference

News Release from Office of Lt Governor March 19, 2013

Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui will attend the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) Federal-State Relations meeting March 20 – 22, 2013.  Lt. Governor Tsutsui will join more than 20 of his peers in Washington D.C. for 2 ½ days of meetings aimed at opening new economic opportunities for states – including, of course,  Hawaii – while identifying challenges coming from the federal government due to sequestration and other federal government actions.

“The meeting is an opportunity to work with international leaders to open doors of trade and commerce while working with federal leaders on issues that may impact the way Hawaii serves its people and families,” said Lt. Governor Tsutsui.   The Lt. Governor will meet with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, the Ambassador of Mexico to the U.S., and officials from the Embassies of Germany and Israel.  He will explore opportunities to assist in increasing employment rates among veterans and the disabled and to increase opportunities in the life sciences fields.

“Every region of the country has been hit with emergencies related to nature, whether drought, flooding, snow, or superstorm,” said NLGA Director Julia Hurst.  “Leading officials from the Corps of Engineers, the Department of Defense, and the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) will work with Lt. Governor Tsutsui on ways states, territories and the federal government can work together on emergency preparation and response.
