The US Census today released nationwide statistics on the rate of disability among recipients of government assistance. In 2011, nearly 46.0 million people, or 19.8 percent of the civilian non-institutionalized population aged 18 years and older, received income based government assistance through SSI, SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, or other government assistance.
Hawaii welfare recipients have the second-lowest disability rates in the US. Here are the numbers:
Hawaii: 204,358 receive Government Assistance:
- 25.2% are Disabled (2nd lowest in the US)
Types of Disability:
- 13.0% have a cognitive disability (6th lowest in US)
- 15.1% have ambulatory disability (2nd lowest in US)
- 13.6% have self-care/independent living disability (5th lowest in US)
