Statement from Wil Okabe, President of the Hawaii State Teachers Association, Regarding Educator Effectiveness System Survey Data

News Release from HSTA 1/10/13

“Hawaii State Teachers Association sent a survey to the teachers of the 82 schools participating in the Educator Effectiveness System Pilot Program. The results of the survey show that teachers see value in elements of the evaluation tools. HSTA and Hawaii teachers welcome an evaluation process and culture that asks, ‘How do we get better?’”

“The survey reveals that there are too many teachers who have not participated in the full breadth of the programs. At this time, the capacity of proper implementation of the pilot program has not been met. HSTA is committed to the system being implemented right, as it will shape our students learning environment for years to come.”

“Establishing an evaluation system that includes clear objectives, proper support, and is matched with a fair and equitable compensation system will attract and retain the high quality teaching force that is necessary to helping our students succeed. We look forward to working collaboratively with the Department of Education and sharing more data and insight in tomorrow’s negotiations. Our intent is to work with the DOE to create a successful Educator Effectiveness System that could lend itself to being a model, nationwide.”
