News Release www.hawaiiroc.org

HONOLULU – Over 200 teams from schools statewide came to the Neil Blaisdell Center this weekend to compete and showcase their robots in the 2012 Hawaii FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championships.

During the 2012 season, FLL teams were tasked to improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected to the communities.  The teams needed to find a senior partner, identify and learn about a problem faced by seniors, create an innovative solution to the identified problem, and share their problem and solution with others.  The teams must also design, build, test, and program an autonomous robot to accomplish the Challenge mission on the field.

ABOUT FIRST LEGO League

FLL is an international program for 9 to 14 year-old children (10 to 16 outside the U.S. and Canada) created in a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group in 1998 based on their common belief that fun and learning go hand-in-hand, and that an inspired mind can accomplish anything. Each September, FIRST LEGO League announces the annual challenge to teams, engaging them in authentic scientific research and hands-on robotics design. Using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technologies and LEGO play materials, children work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program robots to complete missions based on real-world challenges. After eight intense weeks, the competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments.

ABOUT HAWAII ROC AND FRIENDS OF HAWAII ROBOTICS

Recognizing the importance of promoting robotics at an early age and sustaining students’ interest in STEM education throughout their schooling, Hawai`i’s six robotics programs have joined together to form the Hawai`i Robotics Organizing Committee. This is the first time all six of the robotics programs are coordinating efforts to promote robotics education in elementary, middle and high schools statewide.

As a critical component of the Hawai`i Innovation Initiative, robotics engages students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and provides them with the teamwork, critical thinking and problem- solving skills they need to compete in the 21st century workplace. We believe that by strengthening these aptitudes and abilities in our young people, we will build a brighter future for our state.

Friends of Hawai’i Robotics is a non-profit organization designed to help Hawai’i school’s and their robotics programs. The Robotics Organizing Committee (ROC) is run through the Friends of Hawai’i Robotics. ROC was formed from the sought out need in STEM education for Hawai’s schools. ROC combines together the six different robotic programs: FIRST Robotics, Botball, FIRST LEGO League, Underwater ROV, VEX Robotics and Micro Robots. The use of robotics engages students in science, technology, engineering and math. ROC believes that by strengthening these aptitudes and abilities in our young people, we will build a brighter future for our state.
