MEDIA ADVISORY: CAMPAIGN SPENDING COMPLAINT AGAINST FRIENDS OF JOHN MIZUNO AND FRIENDS OF MAY MIZUNO
News Release from Hawaii Republican Party
HONOLULU, HI - Hawaii Republican Party, Executive Director Nacia Blom filed a complaint on behalf of the Party with the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission against 'Friends of John Mizuno' and 'Friends of May Mizuno.
The complaint states that campaign signs apparently paid for by Friends of John Mizuno and used in a prior campaign by John Mizuno are being used by May Mizuno in her candidacy for Honolulu County Council. As the attached photos show, signs made to support John Mizuno for State House have been altered to read "May Mizuno" and "for Council."
May Mizuno filed to run for Honolulu City Council August 31, 2012. Signs previously purchased by "Friends of John Mizuno" were observed in use unaltered and altered to campaign for May Mizuno for Council prior to August 31 and remain visible at numerous locations in the Council District as of the date of this complaint. Unaltered "Mizuno for the people" signs from John Mizuno's campaign are in use throughout the Council district, including areas that lay outside the House district.
The apparent donation of signs by the Friends of John Mizuno to the Friends of May Mizuno constitutes a non-monetary contribution. (HAR § 3-160-4b) The campaign spending reports filed by the Friends of John Mizuno and the Friends of May Mizuno do not reflect this non-monetary contribution.
According to the HRS § 11-382: Campaign funds shall not be used : (1) To support the campaigns of candidates other than the candidate with which they are directly associated.
