$200,000 Project Adding a 4th Lane to H-1, To Be Done in Early August
(This re-striping project increases road capacity 33% but costs 1/27500th as much as Rail.)
News Release from State DoT
The state Department of Transportation (DOT) advises Oahu motorists of changes to on-and-off-ramp traffic patterns as part of the H-1 Freeway Restriping Demonstration Project. When the project is completed, drivers will notice several on-and-off-ramp changes including two in the eastbound (Kokohead-bound) direction and one in the westbound (Ewa-bound) direction.
•Eastbound: The Vineyard Boulevard/Ward Avenue on-ramp to the H-1 Freeway will now merge into a dedicated lane.
•Eastbound: Drivers entering H-1 Freeway from Piikoi Street will now yield before entering the freeway.
•Westbound: The Punahou Street on-ramp is now a dedicated lane with an option to exit to the Lunalilo Street off-ramp (Exit 23). The new additional right lane (fourth lane from left) is now a dedicated lane that exits to the Pali Highway off-ramp (Exit 21B). Through traffic must merge left to continue westbound.
Night work continues on the H-1 Freeway in both directions. Work is expected to be finished in early August, weather-permitting. Please use alternate routes during this time as the DOT works to improve traffic flow through this corridor.
