HONOLULU - Governor Linda Lingle today released a new television spot in her campaign for Hawaii's open U.S. Senate seat.
"A big achievement during my time as Governor was bringing STEM education into the schools," said Governor Lingle. "The jobs of the future are going to require those skills. Today we have robotics teams in more than half the schools on every island," Governor Lingle added.
Through the Hawaii Innovation Initiative, the Lingle Administration launched a bold initiative to substantially improve public school students' academic achievement by adopting educational programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. By the end of Gov. Lingle's second term in office, more than half of all Hawaii schools offered one or more of the six robotics education program. Hawaii's robotics teams have gone on to achieve international success including several World Championship titles.
Moreover, student participation in STEM-inspired extracurricular robotics competitions climbed from 95 teams in 2007 to more than 450 teams today. Funding for the programs comes from a Hawaii-based 501(c)(3) corporation, the Friends of Hawaii Robotics.
