The Hawaii Opinion Research Poll tests voter response to positive and negative statements made about each of the four major candidates in the race. Many are directed at Berg such as:
- “When President Obama was in Hawaii attending a major international conference, Berg got so drunk at the conference that he yelled at Secret Service agents and police were called and removed him.”
Here are some aimed at others:
- “Alex Santiago is a former Legislator from the North Shore and has only lived in this district for a short time. He does not understand the local issues facing our community.”
- “Kym Pine is currently under investigation by the FBI for asking Tom Berg to hire friends and family members of hers in return for the endorsement she gave him that helped him win the Council seat in the special election in 2010.”
- “Mel Kahele is in the pocket of labor unions. He is a former union boss who will put public employees and their pay and pensions over and above our interest. “
The claim that Kym Pine is ‘under investigation by the FBI’ is a lie which exists only in the rantings of Eric Ryan.
The purpose of the poll is to determine which positive claims and negative attacks are most effective in manipulating voters. The results of this poll would assist any candidate in knowing what message to put forward and how to attack his or her opponents.
Profitable non-profit boss Alex Santiago of PHOCUSED pulled papers on April 2. The negative against Santiago was a softball compared to the others, so draw your own conclusions.
