The management team at Nicolites announce their delight at the passing of an amended electronic cigarette bill in Hawaii, which will ensure that e-cigs are not taxed similarly to tobacco products yet will not be sold to minors.

Nicolites, one of the United Kingdom’s leading electronic cigarette retailers, expressed concern last week at the decision of the Hawaii state Legislature to apply a tobacco tax levy to smokeless cigarettes. However, after protests and rising pressure from over one thousand individuals and commercial companies, the Hawaii Senate Ways and Means Committee voted to omit the portion of the bill that would price the products out of the market – a decision that the management team at Nicolites adamantly supports.

The bill, which was passed on Friday 10th February, will prohibit the sale of electronic cigarette starter kits and accessories to minors yet will not class them as tobacco products.

Nikhil Nathwani, Managing Director at Nicolites, believes that the decision is a step in the right direction and will encourage a more positive perception of electric cigarettes.

“Aside from driving business outside of the state of Hawaii, the 70% tax on e cigarette products would have effectively priced them out of the budget of everyday smokers searching for alternatives to their traditional habit,” Nikhil explains.

“It’s clear that governing authorities are starting to listen to the opinions of e cigarette advocates and users and are not so quick to jump to the incorrect conclusion that the products are as harmful as real cigarettes.”
