STATEMENT FROM GOV. LINDA LINGLE ON SUPER COMMITTEE
News Release from www.Lingle2012.com
HONOLULU - Former Governor Linda Lingle, candidate for Hawaii's U.S. Senate seat, released the following statement today on the news that the Congressional Super Committee was unable to agree on a debt reduction plan:
"Like most of the American people, I am deeply disappointed that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction or "Super Committee" established by Congress to address our Federal government's deficit, has failed to agree on any solution. This inaction comes on the heels of last week's announcement that our national debt exceeded $15 trillion for the first time in our history.
The Committee's failure is not the result of a lack of good ideas to solve our federal budget crisis, but rather a lack of leadership. It is now time for Congress and the Administration to re-assert their roles as the elected political leaders of this nation in order to directly and responsibly resolve this deficit crisis.
That is why I am running for the U.S. Senate seat in Hawaii. As a former Mayor and Governor, as well as someone who has always balanced my personal budget, I know that elected officials are expected to make difficult decisions when it is in the best long-run interests of the public. I have demonstrated in my public career that I can work with Republicans, Democrats and Independents, to get the job done.
There are sensible proposals already available to cut federal spending, raise additional revenues and grow our economy. These include the balanced proposals offered by the Bipartisan Policy Center, on which I serve as a founding member of the Governors' Advisory Council. The Center's proposals mirror in key areas the proposals from the Bowles-Simpson National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, convened by President Obama.
The people of Hawaii, and the American people in general, deserve to know their elected leaders can work together for the good of our country. That is why I am running for the United States Senate to return responsible, bipartisan leadership to Washington, D.C."
