Poll shows increasing concern about size of government, economy from young people

It has been a difficult few weeks for President Obama, and an equally difficult period for defenders of individual liberty. The revelations of the IRS scandal, the PRISM program (among others) have been an alarming indication that the federal government has grown even larger and more intrusive than previously thought–a fact that has not been lost on the younger generation.
A recent CNN/ORC poll showed a dramatic 17-point decline in the President’s approval rating among 18-34 year-olds. Call it a note of optimism–young people today have a strong libertarian streak and are learning quickly about the pitfalls of big government. Some other notable highlights from the poll’s under-30 findings:
- 60% believe the federal government has become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens
- 57% disapprove of the way President Obama is handling the economy
- Only 30% approve of the way President Obama is handling the federal budget deficit
- Overall, 48% approve and 50% disapprove of the way President Obama is handling his job as President, bringing his job approval numbers among this demographic underwater for the first time in recent memory
