The Office of the City Auditor for the City and County of Honolulu is seeking interns who are interested in learning about local government auditing, accounting, budgeting, and public administration. The interns will work on audit projects related to governmental programs, such as benchmarking and measuring the performance of the city and county, its departments, and compiling resident perspectives of city and county services. Other performance audits may relate to the economy, efficiency, or effectiveness of governmental programs. The audit results will identify causes and make recommendations for improving the programs. The internships are a unique opportunity for students to learn about the City and County of Honolulu and local government operations.
Applicants may be juniors, seniors, graduate students, or recent graduates interested in programs related to public administration, government administration, business administration, accounting, governmental auditing, law, or fields related to public policy. At the conclusion of the program, the successful applicant may have a finalized product for their professional portfolio, a letter of recommendation, and a certificate of completion. The applicant's level of responsibility during this project will depend on the skills, abilities, and professional experience of the applicant who will work under the supervision of another auditor.
The City Auditor's office will select two interns for the program. The interns will participate on audit projects over the course of six months (subject to availability of funds) and must be willing to see the project through to completion. The interns must commit to a minimum of 12 to 19 hours per week. Work hours are flexible and will be determined in consultation with his or her supervisor. An hourly wage of $13 to $15 per hour will be paid based on the level of experience and the job assignments.
Requirements:
The applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be self-motivated and a self-starter.
- Require minimal guidance and direction;
- Be well-organized and attentive to accuracy and details;
- Have excellent oral and written English skills;
- Be available to work 12 to 19 hours a week for at least 6 months; flexible hours in Kapolei can be arranged around the intern’s school schedule;
- Be comfortable with interviewing department officials, working with city department staff, and working in a team environment;
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation;
- Be able to provide a writing sample with the application; and
- Provide a minimum of 3 academic and/or professional references and pass a background check.
- Be willing to complete and sign a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of another auditor, the intern will:
- Interact with multiple levels of local government; interview department officials and their staff;
- Gather and analyze information about department operations and programs;
- Identify benchmarking and performance measures, potential audit issues, and related audit work, as appropriate;
- Document audit work;
- Review, analyze, and compile information; prepare tables and charts; and evaluate government performance and operations related to specific audit objectives;
- Prepare written reports related to the audit results;
- Communicate in writing and verbally the results of their analysis, conclusions, findings, and recommendations to city managers; and
- Be able to defend audit related work.
