Taxes, Marriage, PLDC Top Agenda for Hawaii Republican Assembly

Message from Hawaii Republican Assembly March 25, 2013

After Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell's proposed 2013-14 City budget was roundly criticized for its gas tax increase, Caldwell announced that he will continue pushing and pushing the City Council to increase the already high gas tax in order to grab more of your money for our bloated City government. What is Caldwell's excuse? He claims the City needs even more of your hard-earned money to fix potholes and make improvements, as if taxpayers don't see the inherent conflict of already having the highest gas tax in the nation and the worst roads in the nation. Our city government has been (and continues to be) mismanaged. Please contact the Mayor's office today and tell him we already pay enough to get the job done. And please contact your councilmember to tell them to stay strong in preventing more tax increases like Mayor Caldwell's needless gas tax.

Despite existing diversity of men and women on State boards and commissions, the Hawaii State Senate is considering a measure (Senate Resolution 66) which urges Governor Neil Abercrombie "to achieve or maintain gender equity in the nominations and appointments of members to state boards and commissions." Plain and simple, this would be a mandated quota system which flies in the face of appointing (or hiring) individuals based on merit. Such arbitrary mandates are un-American and must be rejected. It appears that the reason for this bill is to open the door for micromanagement, frivolous lawsuits and even for broadening the definition of 'gender' as is now happening in other states and countries. These are the types of bills which routinely sail through Hawaii State Legislature because of weak opposition. Let your State Representative and your State Senator know that you are watching them.

In 1998, Hawaii voters overwhelmingly approved an amendment to the State Constitution which attempted to support traditional marriage by permitting the State Legislature to prohibit same-sex marriages from being conducted and/or recognized in Hawaii. As part of a recent nationwide push by advocates of same-sex marriages, Hawaii state senators are considering a proposal (Senate Resolution 123) to "study" the impact of same-sex marriages coming to Hawaii. To anyone paying attention, this is obviously the next step in a political kabuki dance to expand far beyond our state legislature's very recent enactment of "civil unions" for same-sex couples in order to completely redefine marriage in Hawaii in the name of "equality". The co-introducers of this proposal are Senator Mike Gabbard and Senator Clayton Hee. There's no putting this genie back in the bottle.

Only just days after the Hawaii State Legislature says it 'got the message' from Hawaii residents that we don't want unelected boards like the extremely unpopular PLDC (Public Land Development Corporation) entering into 'public-private partnerships' to undertake development and redevelopment of state land in order to find a new source of big money for our bloated and cash-strapped state government (and to reward political donors), those sneaky folks at the State Capitol are quickly dreaming up a way of packaging the same scheme with a brand new name: The Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA). This new entity is being pushed through the legislature using Senate Bill 215, Senate Draft 3, House Draft 1. State politicians are so excited about creating this new entity of unelected yet well-connected VIP's that they've already figured out projects they can start with AND have even decided to give them a bunch of money to get the ball rolling. The majority Democrats who control the State House and the State Senate know how to fool their constituents by making the PLDC disappear and unveiling its successor the PPPA during the same legislative session. Will they get away with this sleight of hand? It's up to you and how much influence you decide to exert on your elected officials.
