Allegedly Naked Editor with Wings allegedly fabricated sources (endorsed twice by Advertiser!)

Sometimes you just have to laugh out loud at those who consider themselves to be "conscious, enlightened, and progressive".

HawaiiReporter

The university has confirmed that from January 2008 to May 2009, the editor, Kris DeRego, made up the names of 21 sources in his articles and quoted eight people identified as students who were not enrolled at the time the articles were published.

Akamai readers will remember that the Advertiser endorsed DeRego for Board of Education in 2006.  After semi-naked pictures emerged of Mr DeRego with airbrushed wings emerged on the internet, he was defeated by John Pennebacker.  The Advertiser also endorsed transsexual Mr Kim Coco Iwamoto for BoE.

Obviously DeRego will now be hired onto the Advertiser's editorial board.  And who is Kris DeRego?

The Honolulu Advertiser Endorsing Alleged Thief, Wanker? (Sept 16, 2006)

And I noticed that one of their BOE endorsements, Kris DeRego, was the subject of a news article in the Sept. 16th Honolulu Star-Bulletin entitled "Allegations of theft, sex abuse swirl around BOE candidate" about his alleged theft from a former employer, his alleged sexual abuse of a person who allegedly took out a restraining order against him, and his alleged lying on his resume about being a student at University of Hawaii.

See http://starbulletin.com/2006/09/16/news/story04.html

So -- think The Honolulu Advertiser is planning on pulling that endorsement?

...wait-- the story gets even better...and the Advertiser is found to be once again backing DeRego:

SB: UH reporter allegedly faked interview subjects (June 25, 2009)

At KaLeo DeRego won awards in the annual University of Hawaii Board of Publications competition, which was judged this year by members of the Honolulu Advertiser and Pacific Business News.

According to his MySpace entry, DeRego is a 2000 graduate of Castle High School and is majoring in political science, speech and philosophy.

DeRego was a candidate for the state Board of Education in 2006.

Allegations of theft by a former employer came to light during the campaign.

In June 2006, DeRego was served with a three-year restraining order sought by a former female friend. The order was dissolved shortly after it was issued.

These are the people who think they are smarter than us.  And DeRego is just the kind of person who is advanced and feted by Hawaii's corporatist elite.  We haven't heard the last of DeRego.  In fact....

KGMB: Ka Leo Editor Speaks Out; Blames Paper

A newspaper editor accused of using fake quotes in more than two dozen stories speaks out Thursday night, calling the claims "fallacious and inflammatory."

Derego, a former Board of Education candidate is seeking legal advice and may sue the paper for the potential damage this may have on his reputation.

What reputation?  His reputation as an alleged winged naked guy?  As an alleged thief?  As an accused stalker?  As a politician so questionable that the Advertiser would endorse him?  As a writer so questionable that he is again endorsed by the Advertiser?

The Advertiser June 26 finally covers the story, DeRego is now blaming his copy editor.  Yep that's a winner all right!

FLASHBACK: Six-Ringed Circus

Kris DeRego, another Windward candidate, beat out incumbent BOE member Paul Vierling with twice as many votes. His name recognition boomed after The Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Weekly endorsed him. These publications withdrew their endorsements just days before the primary election, but after their election guides were printed, when DeRego’s former employer revealed that DeRego stole liquor and money from his Ward-based business - allegations DeRego did not deny. Adding an even stranger twist to the story, an email was circulated about DeRego’s web site, which reportedly contained naked pictures and odd comments about his alleged perversity. DeRego received 25,252 votes.
