South Park Ridicules Kauai Malihini

Available Online November 17, 2012

Movie Line: Are Parker and Stone somehow also having some fun with Argo producer George Clooney? One of the subplots of the South Park episode is about residents of Kaua'i claiming to be natives of Hawaii when they're just longtime residents who got there before the more recent tourists, whom they despise. (WORD!) Although Clooney's name is not mentioned in the episode, I was reminded of the plot of Alexander Payne's 2011 movie The Descendants, which starred the actor and got him an Best Actor Oscar nomination. In the movie, Clooney plays a genuine Hawaii native who's grappling with selling his family's 25,000 acres of pristine Kaua'i land to a developer.

KGI: Lihu’e Airport, Nawiliwili Bay, Kalapaki Beach, haoles, Elvis, cruise ships, the Coco Palms, Duke’s Kaua‘i restaurant, chi-chi and background characters that resemble Linda Lingle and Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

It’s all in the latest episode of the popular adult cartoon show “South Park.”

For those who missed it, the “Going Native” episode features two of the show’s main characters, Butters and Kenny, on a trip to Kaua‘i and pokes a great deal of humor at the Garden Isle and its “native” inhabitants.

Going Native

Original Air Date: 10.17.2012

Butters’ outrageous behavior is a sign. It's time for him to begin a journey where he will follow in the path of his ancestors. When Butters starts acting out at school, his parents realize it’s time to tell him why he’s not like all of the other kids. He must travel to a foreign place to learn the ways of his people. It will be a difficult trip for a young boy to make alone so Butters chooses Kenny to travel with him to the distant and secluded island of Kauai.
