The first COVID-19 vaccines are here on Kauai. On December 21, 2020 Kauai received its initial shipment of vaccines and began vaccinating healthcare workers that day. Residents of long-term care facilities received vaccines through direct federal contracts with CVS and Walgreens. Those vaccinations began on December 28, 2020. First responders and frontline essential workers such as utility workers and airport personnel with frequent contact with travelers started receiving vaccinations on December 29, 2020.

So far, more than 4,000 doses have been administered to healthcare workers, first responders, front-line essential workers, public transit employees, long-term care residents, as well as workers in education and childcare.

Kauai hospitals will begin vaccinating our kupuna aged 75 and older this week. Local Hawaii State Department of Health clinics are focusing on residents who work in education and childcare. Later this month, the next group to receive vaccinations will include food and agricultural workers, manufacturing workers, postal service workers and grocery store workers.

Two vaccines have been authorized by the FDA for emergency use. The first, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, was authorized by the FDA on December 11, 2020. The second, developed by Moderna, was authorized by the FDA on December 18, 2020.

Wilcox Medical Center Rolls Out Covid-19 Vaccine To Kauai Community

Wilcox to begin providing vaccinations to adults ages 75 and up on Jan. 15

News Release from Hawai’i Pacific Health 01/11/2021

In conjunction with the state’s COVID-19 vaccination plan, Wilcox Medical Center will begin administering the Pfizer vaccine to adults on Kauai ages 75 and older starting Friday, Jan 15. The vaccine clinics will be open to patients of Wilcox Medical Center and Kauai Medical Clinic, as well as the general public.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer these community vaccination clinics to our kupuna, who continue to be among the most vulnerable populations to COVID-19,” said Jen H. Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center and CEO of Kauai Medical Clinic. “As we look ahead, further vaccine clinics are in the works for other groups based on state guidelines. The vaccine is an important tool in the fight against COVID-19 to help keep our community well, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to get it when it is available to them.”

Vaccine clinics will be held at Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, and are scheduled as follows:

Friday, Jan. 15 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 19 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 21 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 22 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vaccinations are available by appointment only.

To begin the process, adults ages 75 and older can complete the online appointment request form at >>> WilcoxHealth.org/Vaccine <<<.

A representative will follow-up to schedule an appointment. Patients of Wilcox and Kauai Medical Clinic who have a MyChart® by Hawaii Pacific Health account will also be sent a notification through MyChart when they can sign up for an appointment. Patients who do not already have an account are encouraged to create one online at MyChart.HawaiiPacificHealth.org, as it will be the easiest way to schedule an appointment.

Walk-ins will not be accepted. People with appointments should use the side entrance to Wilcox Medical Center next to the Infusion Center when arriving at the medical center.

Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital will also be offering vaccination clinics. Additional clinics will be planned in the upcoming weeks as more vaccine shipments arrive.
