Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan

From Imua TMT!

Aloha TMT supporters,   September 24, 2020

Please see the message below from the team auditing UH's management of Mauna Kea.  If you can attend these public meetings to speak in favor of continuing astronomy on Mauna Kea please do so.

September 3, 2020

Aloha,

We have scheduled three virtual community meetings on the Independent Evaluation of UH’s Implementation of the Mauna Kea CMP.  During the three meetings we will provide a brief overview of the evaluation process, but the main purpose of these meetings will be to gather input from the community on UH’s management of Mauna Kea.

The meeting dates are as follows:

  • Community Meeting #1 – Tuesday, September 29, 2020  at 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  (Click here to register for Community Meeting #1)
  • Community Meeting #2 – Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  (Click here to register for Community Meeting #2)
  • Community Meeting #3 – Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  (Click here to register for Community Meeting #3)

We hope you are able to attend one of the meetings, as your input is important to not only the current management of Mauna Kea but for future management of Mauna Kea as well.

We have also added some brief polls to our website where you can click on any of the Management Actions and Share Your Mana‘o.  Click here to participate in our informal community polls.

Remember to check our Website and Facebook page for the latest updates and don’t forget to register for one of the upcoming community meetings.

Here is some information Imua TMT shared with you in a previous email sent September 1, 2020 about UH and Mauna Kea:

UH is actually doing a pretty good job managing Mauna Kea.  UH received a bad audit in 1998, over 20 years ago.  Since then, the audits have shown vast improvement.  When you compare Mauna Kea to many other state and local government projects around town, Mauna Kea is incredibly well managed.

When you compare the pristine astronomy precinct to the trash and debris left behind by the protesters, you quickly realize that having UH manage Mauna Kea is better than having the protesters do it.

TMT is literally the model for how future astronomy leases should be done.  See audit recommendations 1.f and 2.b, summarized nicely on page 15 (PDF page 21) of this report.

The CMP starts with a shameful display of lies in a introduction titled "Cultural Anchor".  This article claims Mauna Kea is sacred to "the Native Hawaiians".  This is a complete fabrication.  Not only did Hawaiians never share a unified definition of sacredness or a single creation myth, we also abolished the Kapu religion 201 years ago.  We live in the age of `ai noa now, or freedom of belief, and therefore no claims of sacredness can be forced upon any Hawaiians, ever.  This introduction should be removed from the CMP.  It displays a complete lack of rigor in evaluating claims made by protesters.
