In a surprise move, House District 5 Representative Richard Creagan has withdrawn from the ballot. According to the Office of Elections printout, Creagan made his unannounced move June 3, 2020—the last day for withdrawals and one day after the deadline to file.
Creagan had filed just a week earlier--May 27, 2020.
Creagan’s withdrawal leaves August 8 Democratic Primary voters with a choice between South Kona coffee farmers Colehour Bondera and Jeanne Kapela. HD 5 encompasses parts of the South Kona and Kau Districts on the Big Island.
Bondera pulled papers June 1, 2020 and filed June 2, 2020.
Kapela, in 2018, faced off with Creagan losing a three-way Democratic Primary 47% to 37%. She filed on May 21, 2020.
The winner will face Libertarian Michael Last and Aloha Aina candidate Citlalli Johanna Decker in the general election November 3, 2020. There is no Republican candidate in the race.
