Former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann today pulled papers to run for Honolulu Mayor.
An Office of Elections candidate printout shows Hannemann listing an as-yet non-functional campaign website, www.MufiforHonolulu.com, and a contact phone number associated with his previous campaign manager, Colin Ching.
A poll released Wednesday shows the Honolulu Mayoral race led by Rick Blangiardi with 21% followed by Colleen Hanabusa at 15%. On Thursday the HGEA announced it is endorsing Keith Amemiya.
Hannemann resigned as Honolulu Mayor in 2010 to run for Governor. Hannemann’s Managing Director Kirk Caldwell became Mayor. Mufi lost to Neil Abercrombie.
In 2012, Hannemann ran for Congress and lost the Democratic Primary to Tulsi Gabbard.
In 2014, Hannemann was an independent candidate for Governor, finishing third with 11.6% of the vote. David Ige was elected.
According to the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission, Hannemann has renamed his state campaign committee the Hannemann Committee 2020. Hannemann's last campaign finance report, filed December 31, 2019, shows $113K cash on hand and $114K in outstanding debts. A series of amendments to the Hannemann Committee were filed with CSC May 22 through 27, 2020.
The deadline to file nomination petitions is Tuesday, June 2.

"Let me be clear. I'm not implicated, involved, or have been named in any of those," Hannemann said. "So once again, I want to be real clear. I was not there when these things happen. And that's what I'm saying. I can go back. I know where the bones are buried, if you will, and we're going to be a different type of structure to it."
