OHA Trustee Keli‘i Akina Raises $100K+ Toward Re-Election

News Release from Akina for OHA

HONOLULU, HAWAII--May 1, 2020 -- Trustee-at-Large Keli'i Akina raised $100,094 toward his re-election bid during the current election cycle according to his campaign organization's report to the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission posted on April 30, 2020.  A total of 148 individuals are listed as contributors.  Despite limited campaign activity during the Coronavirus crisis, $51,021 in contributions was reported for the period of January 1 – April 25, 2020.  See: Report CC10945

"The high level of contributions toward my re-election affirms significant public support for our work in bringing transparency and accountability to OHA," Keli'i Akina said.  "I have been a watchdog and reformer fighting for the needs of OHA's beneficiaries, and Hawaii's voters recognize this."

In the 2016 general election, Akina garnered 163,699 votes state-wide to win a four-year term in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.  Following his election, Akina fulfilled a major campaign promise, ensuring that OHA underwent an independent audit for fraud, waste, and abuse.  For Akina’s report on that audit, see “Red Flags: An Analysis of the Independent Audit of OHA and its LLCs.”

In pursuing re-election, Akina pledges to continue advancing his three-fold plan to 1) "Protect OHA funds" through audits and fiscal reforms; 2) "Grow OHA funds" through the development of resources such as the Kaka‘ako Makai land-holdings; and 3) "Use OHA funds" to meet the needs of Hawaiians for housing, jobs, education, and health-care.

Keli'i Akina is available for interviews.  His campaign website is www.KeliiAkina.com

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is the constitutionally-established government agency responsible for bettering the conditions of Hawaiians. Its funding sources include public tax dollars, commercial activity and revenue generated from the “ceded lands” now held in public trust by the State of Hawai’i.
