Time for me to say, “Mahalo and aloha”

by Rep Cynthia Thielen, October 8, 2019

Today I announce that I will not be running for reelection to the State House of Representatives. I am deeply grateful for the 30 years of support from my District. After this long term of service, though, it’s time to move on.

Every two years – even when I ran unopposed – I walked door-to-door to talk with residents. Our District’s people deserve to be personally contacted and heard by anyone who wants to earn their votes. It’s physically demanding but immensely rewarding. It’s the best way to get to know constituents as individuals and to listen to them in a one-on-one setting.

I launched my Legislative journey in 1990, when my granddaughter Winter Maile at age 6, walked Kailua’s Duck Road for me with her dad, my son Dave. Winter Maile is now 36.

While I’m still fiercely advocating for our District at my strategic and mental peaks, and thankfully have a clean bill of health, I believe our District needs someone who will be 100% actively meeting with and representing them 24/7 for years to come. At age 86, that is something I no longer feel able to do.

I deeply appreciate the support of my constituents through the decades. Many of the children I met in the ‘90s are now raising families of their own in Kailua, part of the next generation of caring and participating Windward residents.

I thank all of you for 30 wonderful years. When my current term ends, I’ll still be very active in our Windward and State issues. I plan to consider many ways that I can remain involved in public service. I feel great pride and gratitude for being trusted to carry out the responsibilities as your State Representative for three decades.

Mahalo,
Cynthia
