HAWAII SEED CROP VALUE DECREASES

The value of Hawaii’s seed industry is estimated at $106 million for the 2018-19 season, according to a survey conducted by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This preliminary estimate is 13 percent lower than the 2017-18 final estimate of $122 million.

Seed corn accounts for $102 million, or 97 percent of the total value in 2018-19. Various other seed crops account for the remaining 3 percent.

Out-shipments of seed are projected to total 4.8 million pounds during the 2018-19 season, down 9 percent from the 5.3 million pounds shipped during the previous season.

Acreage harvested for all seed crops is expected to total 2,530 acres during the 2018-19 season, down 17 percent from the previous season.
