Honolulu ranked America’s best small city for second year in a row
News Release from City and County of Honolulu, June 5, 2019
Honolulu – According to this year’s ranking of the best cities in America by destination branding firm Resonance Consultancy, Honolulu has once again been deemed the best small city in America. The small city category rates cities with populations between 200,000 to one million residents. Honolulu was also ranked No. 1 in the Neighborhoods and Parks & Outdoors subcategories (report attached).
The top 10 rankings are as follows (small cities - population under 1 million):
- Honolulu
- Omaha
- Charleston
- Albuquerque
- Tulsa
- Reno
- Asheville
- Colorado Springs
- Myrtle Beach
- Madison
Honolulu’s No. 1 ranking was calculated based on several criteria, including crime rates, air quality, housing affordability, entertainment offerings, cultural diversity, and economic vitality.
“There’s the unparalleled natural beauty, of course, but innovative shopping and dining are diversifying America’s Best Small City like never before,” Resonance Consultancy said about Honolulu’s No. 1 Ranking. “The city rules our Parks & Outdoors subcategory, led by its powdery beaches, some of the best and safest ocean swimming in the state (often with sea turtles and dolphins) and the option to head for the emerald Ko‘olau Range before or after work… Combine this with the climate, fragrant trade winds and surreal geography (not to mention an ancient history slowly emerging from the stacked lava walls) and you have a city that succumbed to playing by Mother Nature’s rules a long time ago... To say nothing of a committed tourism marketing budget to keep the city’s top industry humming.”
