Trump, the Jones Act and LNG

Hansen on ThinkTech discusses a blanket Jones Act waiver for LNG Tankers

From Hawaii Shippers Council, April 27, 2019

Jay Fidell, the President and Founder of ThinkTech Hawaii Inc. interviewed Mike Hansen, President, Hawaii Shippers’ Council, regarding the recent proposal by the Trump Administration to issue a longer term waiver for foreign LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers to transport LNG between domestic U.S. ports.

The interview was streamed live between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2019, on the regular ThinkTech Community Matters program with episode title “Trump, the Jones Act and LNG.”

ThinkTech is a non-profit digital media company with a studio located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, that streams live original programing on the Internet from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm every weekday afternoon Hawaii Standard Time (HST).

LNG Carriers are highly-specialized cryogenic tankers designed and built to transport LNG in bulk from what are known as LNG export terminals to LNG receiving terminals. In order to liquefy natural gas its temperature must be reduced to approximately minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit. This is accomplished at the LNG export terminal. Liquefaction reduces the volume of the natural gas at ambient temperature and pressure by a factor of about 1/600 to make for economical storage and transportation.

This interview was occasioned by news articles regarding the waiver proposal that appeared in Bloomberg April 23, 2019, and an article published on April 25, 2019, in the local Honolulu Star Advertiser, which is the paper of record and the daily with the largest circulation in the State of Hawaii.
