A Jones Act conversation with Rick Hamada and Mike Hansen

by Michael Hansen, President, Hawaii Shippers’ Council, April 25, 2019

The popular Honolulu talk show host, Rick Hamada, recently had Mike Hansen, President, the Hawaii Shippers’ Council, on his morning drive program -- the Rick Hamada Show -- for a conversation about the Jones Act and its impact on Hawaii.

The Rick Hamada Show is broadcast on weekday mornings from 6 to 10 o’clock local time on KHVH Radio 830 AM, an iHeartmedia Inc. station.  This was one of several appearances by Mike Hansen on the Rick Hamada Show to discuss the Jones Act dating back to the mid-1990s.

The recent conversation was originally broadcast live during the 9 o’clock hour on Monday, March 18th and rebroadcast during the 8 o’clock hour on Thursday, March 28th on KHVH.  An edited half-hour version was broadcast on Easter Sunday morning April 21st simultaneously across the seven iHeartMedia stations in the State of Hawaii (KSSK AM/FM, Island 985, The Beat 939, Star1019, KHVH 830, FOX Sports 990, KUBT-FM) on their weekly Community Matters program. The audio from that Easter morning version is linked here.

There are two errors in the conversation. The first one regards the number of major U.S. shipbuilding yards which construct large seagoing self-propelled ships of 1,000 gross tons and over and are important to the noncontiguous jurisdictions of the U.S. (Alaska, Guam, Hawaii and Puerto Rico). The audio cites six major shipbuilding yards and it should have stated seven.  Four of these seven yards perform only Navy work, two only commercial work and one both Navy and commercial.

The second error is in respect to the late 1990s estimates of the economic impact of the Jones Act on Hawaii made by the Hawaii Shippers’ Council. The audio cites an estimated cost of $1,000 per family per year. It should have stated $3,000 per family and $1,000 per person annually.
