With his son-in-law under arrest in Honolulu as part of the Lyon Associates bribery case, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) President Peter Christian may be on his way out.
UPDATE: Final Election Results Confirm Christian Loss to Panuelo
FSM citizens went to the polls March 5, 2019 to elect the new Congress. Preliminary results reported by Pacific News Center show Christian is running behind Senator David Panuelo in the contest for an at-large Pohnpei Senatorial seat. If Christian loses, he will not be eligible for reelection as President.
Results are coming out very slowly. Pacific News Center reports: “According to preliminary and unofficial results of Tuesday’s elections, Panuelo received 6,773 votes against Christian’s 6,716.”
Under FSM law, the President is elected by the unicameral FSM Congress after new Congressional elections which are held every four years. The 14 members of Congress choose a President from the four at-large FSM Senators.
