House Republican Package 'A Better Tomorrow'

2019 Legislative Session

This is my continuing effort to keep you informed of our progress and to provide information as we change the political landscape on Oahu.

Aloha Republicans,

On January 16, 2019 the 30th Legislative session will begin. Our voice and opinions are powerful. Our legislators were elected to represent our concerns. It is up to us to voice concerns and to make our voice heard. If we take the time to convey our thoughts to our elected officials and follow up with them, our message will have great impact, but we all must get involved.

At the last State Committee meeting, Minority Leader Gene Ward, Representative Bob McDermott and Representative Val Okimoto presented the Minority Caucus Legislative agenda for 2019.  Here are the State-wide bills they will be presenting as part of their "A Better Tomorrow" package:

For Your Family

  1. Cultivating Successful Futures - Expanding funding for DOE to support vocational training for students.
  2. Steering Resource to Students - Redirect funds for Art in Public Places to DOE student art programs.
  3. Ending Sex Abuse - Erin’s Law: Implementing a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education Program.  (See http://www.erinslaw.org)

For You

  1. Making Hawaii More Affordable - Eliminate the GET on food and medical services.
  2. Promoting Jobs & Economic Growth - Tax credits for local food & beverage manufacturing.
  3. Protecting Your Paycheck - Eliminating State Individual Income Tax.

For Your Community

  1. Curbing the Doctor Shortage - Providing matching funding for Medical Residency Programs.
  2. Building Wealth for Renters - Requiring developers to reinvest in Hawaii’s families.
  3. Mitigating Sea Level Rise - Creating a Sea Level Rise Task Force.

Additionally, they will be resubmitting the Born Alive Infant; Abortion; Penalties Bill, which ensures the protection and promotion of the health and well-being of all infants born alive in the State. Mandates medically appropriate and reasonable life-saving and life-sustaining medical care and treatment to all born alive infants. Provides civil and criminal penalties. See 2018 HB-1368.
