What’s an airconditioned Neal Katyal worth?

$185,000, according to a UIPA’d contract documents obtained from the Hawaii Attorney General’s office.

The State-hired Katyal lost his Trump v Hawaii travel ban appeal to the US Supreme Court in June.  Katyal's August 21, 2018 contract covers the appeal of Young v Hawaii, an ‘open carry’ Second Amendment case decided in July by the Ninth Circuit Court.

In a statement to reporters, the Hawaii Firearms Coalition points out “Hawaii is the only state in the Nation that denies 100% of its law-abiding residents the ability to possess a firearm outside of their home for self-defense. Although Hawaii law allows for permits to be issued, it is the policy of the State and counties to never issue a permit to carry openly or concealed a firearm upon their person.”

While Katyal and the State do not support citizens’ Second Amendment rights, Attachment 3 to the contract shows that Katyal’s hourly rate of $1,550, discounted 50% for Hawaii, includes air conditioning.

Katyal’s associates rake in airconditioned hourlies ranging from $735 to $600—all discounted 50% for Hawaii.

Andrew Namiki Roberts, Director for the Hawaii Firearms Coalition, says, “The right to self-defense is  inherently a human right that extends beyond the home. The people have a right to be equipped with the tools needed to adequately defend themselves and the State is going out of its way to deny the people that right.”

Going out of its way but not going without AC.
