Honolulu, October 10, 2018--After denial of a UIPA request for the financial records of Limited Liability Corporations owned and created by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawai’i Free Press editor Andrew Walden is suing three of the LLCs.
Attorney Anna Elento-Sneed, representing Hiilei Aloha, Hookele Pono, and Hiipaka, argues that the LLCs are immune from the Hawaii Uniform Information Practice Act (UIPA).
The case was heard before First Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Crabtree Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Walden is represented by former Attorney General Michael Lilly.
This is the latest of several attempts to require that OHA’s LLCs comply with Hawaii’s open records laws.
UPDATE Nov 2, 2018: Friend of the Court briefs supporting Walden's position have been submitted to the Court by Tax Foundation Hawaii and the Civil Beat Law Center.
