MAZIE HIRONO’S CAMPAIGN CALLS KAVANAUGH ALLEGATION FUNDRAISER EMAIL SENT DURING HEARING AN ‘ERROR’
by Evie Fordham, Daily Caller, September 27, 2018
Democratic Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono’s campaign team called a fundraiser email about sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh an “error” after it was sent out during a hearing with testimony from Kavanaugh and his accuser Christine Blasey Ford.
“A fundraising message was sent this morning in error,” “Team Hirono” wrote in an email, according to CNN. “We apologize sincerely for the error. All contributions that were made on this page will be donated to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault.”
Hirono is running for re-election with only token opposition this November.
“I am about to ask you to make a donation to support my re-election campaign before the [Federal Election Commission] fundraising deadline on Sunday,” read a fundraising email for Hirono, according to a screenshot posted on Twitter Thursday morning. “Here’s the main reason: I am spending every minute of my day fighting the Republicans who are desperate to rush Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination and deny a fair investigation into the credible sexual misconduct allegations against him.”
Hirono is “particularly vulnerable to right-wing attacks” because of her focus on the Kavanaugh allegations, the email said.
Hirono told men to “just shut up and step up” on Sept. 18 in light of accusations against Kavanaugh from Ford. A reporter asked Hirono about the effect of having women on the Senate Judiciary Committee that is holding Thursday’s hearing.
“Of course it helps that there are women on that committee, but you know what? I expect the men in this country and the men in this committee … to demand an FBI investigation,” Hirono, a member of the committee, said. “But really, guess who’s perpetuating all of these kinds of actions? It’s the men in this country! And I just want to say to the men in this country — just shut up and step up! Do the right thing for a change.”
Kavanaugh will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee after testimony from Ford on Thursday.
