Weakening Quickly, Lane Now a Tropical Storm

HONOLULU:

The city said it will open 20 emergency shelters on Oahu at 10 a.m. Thursday.  Shelters will open at: 

  • Aiea High
  • Leilehua High
  • Radford High
  • Waialua High and Intermediate
  • Dole Middle
  • Farrington High
  • Kaimuki Middle
  • Kaiser High
  • McKinley High
  • Stevenson Middle 
  • Campbell High
  • Kapolei High
  • Leihuki Elementary
  • Nanakuli High and Intermediate
  • Pearl City High
  • Waipahu High
  • Brigham Young University Hawaii
  • Castle High
  • Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate

Maui County:

Shelter Locations Open 2pm Wednesday:

Hurricane Lane Update--Shelters WED 8/22/18 1:30PM

This is a Civil Defense hurricane update for Wednesday, August 22 at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Due to the potential effects of Hurricane Lane, four emergency shelters have been opened on the north and west side of Hawaii Island. These shelters are for your convenience, but there is NO mandatory evacuation at this time. The shelters are available if you need to relocate.

If you choose to relocate to a shelter, food is not provided. Please bring your blankets and pillows if possible. However, the shelter is open to everyone with or without these items. 

Civil Defense is monitoring Hurricane Lane and will keep you informed of any changes that may affect your safety.  

Again, there is NO mandatory evacuation at this time.

The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Oahu and Maui
County.
 
The Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued for Kauai County.
 
SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:
 
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
 
Interests in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands should monitor
the progress of Tropical Storm Lane.
 
 
DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lane was
located near latitude 19.7 North, longitude 159.4 West. Lane is
moving toward the west near 7 mph (11 km/h) and this motion is
expected to continue this afternoon through Monday with an increase
in forward speed. On the forecast track, Lane is expected to pass
about 150 miles south of Kauai later today.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.
Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours. 
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 100 miles (155 km)
from the center.
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 997 mb (29.44 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
RAINFALL: Lingering moisture associated with Tropical Storm Lane
will produce excessive rainfall this weekend, which could lead to
additional flash flooding and landslides. Lane is expected to
produce additional rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches across
windward Big Island and Maui and 3 to 5 inches elsewhere.
Localized storm total amounts well in excess of 40 inches have
already been observed along the windward side of the Big Island.
 
SURF: High surf is expected along exposed south and east shorelines
of the main Hawaiian Islands today.
